Engineering a bachelor of Engineering who is of at least five years standing, or a graduate in some other faculty who is of at least five years

standing and who satisfies the faculty that he possesses adequate experience of Engineering.

2. (i) An applicant for candidature for the degree shall submit a list of his published work and three copies of all the work to be submitted for examination. The work to be submitted shall include work which has been published.

(ii) An applicant may not submit for examination work in respect of which he has already qualified for a degree in any univer- sity, or, without the permission of the faculty, work which he has previously presented for any such degree.

(iii) An applicant, when submitting work for examination for the degree, shall state generally in a preface and specifically in notes the sources from which his information is derived, the extent to which he has availed himself of the work of others and, in general terms, the portions of his work which he claims to be original.

(iv) When an applicant submits for examination work which has been undertaken in collaboration with another person, he shall state in writing signed by him the extent of his own share in planning, carrying out and writing the account of such work.

3. (i) The faculty shall appoint a committee to determine;

(a) whether the subject matter of the work presented falls within the scope of Engineering and, if so,

(b) whether, in general terms, the quality and quantity of the work presented justifies submitting the work to examination.

(ii) The faculty may appoint persons who are not members of the faculty of Engineering to such committee.

(iii) If the committee decides that an examination is justified, it shall

( a ) nominate examiners and

(b) recommend to faculty that the apphcant be admitted to candidature for the degree.

(iv) On the recommendation of such committee, the faculty may admit the applicant to candidature for the degree and forward the names of the examiners to Council.

(v) Subject to the statutes and regulations of the University, the faculty may give directions for the conduct of the examination.

4. A candidate

(a) whose work, in the opinion of the examiners,

(i) includes a substantial original contribution to knowledge in Engineering and

(ii) is of a standard which would give him authoritative standing in his field and

( b ) who has fulfilled the prescribed conditions may be admitted to the degree of doctor of Engineering.

REGULATION 3.48—DEGREE OF BACHELOR OF ARCHITECTURE 1. There shall be:

( a ) A degree of bachelor of Architecture; and

( b ) A degree of bachelor of Architecure with honours.

2. Candidates for the degree of bachelor of Architecture or for the degree of bachelor of Architecture with honours shall after matriculation pursue their studies for five Years, pass the prescribed examinations, obtain the prescribed practical experience, and comply with the con- ditions of this regulation.

3. The subjects of the course and the conditions under which such subjects may be taken shall be prescribed by the Professorial Board on the recommendation of the faculty and published with the details of subjects.

3A. No candidate may pursue a course of study in any Year or re- ceive credit for any examination passed unless his proposed selection of subjects for the Year has been approved by the faculty. Any subsequent alterations in the course of study must be approved by the faculty.

4. During each Year a candidate shall perform field, laboratory and drawing office work and attend demonstrations and excursions herein- after collectively referred to as "practical work" and attend tutorials.

These requirements shall be prescribed by the Professorial Board on the recommendation of the faculty and published with the details of subjects. Subject to dispensation granted by the faculty in special cases no candidate shall be admitted to examination in a subject in which he has not performed such practical work or attended tutorials unless he has satisfied the faculty that he has had the necessary practical training elsewhere.

4A. A candidate's progress in his course shall be by Years. Each such Year shall be defined by the requisite subjects of the Year together with approved elective subjects carrying a total of 40 points. A Year comprising subjects carrying a total of other than 40 points may not be approved unless special permission is granted by the faculty. Points to be awarded for each subject of the course shall be as prescribed from time to time by the Professorial Board on the recommendation of the faculty and pubhshed with the details of the subjects.

5. (a) To pass a Year of the course a candidate shall comply with one of the following conditions:

(i) he shall pass the prescribed examinations in or obtain credit for tlie approved subjects of his Year; or

(ii) he shall be passed by the faculty in the Year of the course as a whole. In awarding such pass the faculty shall take into ac- count his performance in all subjects in accordance with prin- ciples determined by the faculty from time to time and approved by the Professorial Board. A candidate passed by the faculty in the Year as a whole who has not passed the prescribed examin- ation in or obtained credit for any particular subject shall not be recorded as having passed in that subject, but shall be allowed to proceed with the requisite subjects of a later Year of the course for which a pass in such subjects may be a pre- requisite.

( b ) A candidate who before the beginning of any academic year has not passed a Year of the course in accordance with sub- section ( a ) hereof:

(i) shall take or repeat in that academic year or in a subsequent year the whole of that Year of the course which he has not completed save that a candidate shall not be required to re- peat any subject which he has passed and is taught by any other faculty;

(ii) may not take any subjects of a subsequent Year of the course;

unless special permission to do otherwise is granted by the faculty.

6. Repealed.

7. (1) Every candidate shall acquire practical experience in archi- tecture during long vacations or during one year subsequent to the completion or in the opinion of the faculty, substantial completion of the Third Year, or during both.

Provided that—

(a) the full period of such practical experience shall not be less than twelve calendar months and

( b ) except in special cases approved by the faculty, such practical experience shall be acquired before the commencement of the Fourth Year.

(2) Every candidate shall, before commencing this work, obtain the approval of the faculty of the conditions under which he proposes to acquire his practical experience and shall, after completing the work, submit a certificate satisfactory to the faculty that he has fulfilled the conditions so approved.

8. Where pursuant to regulations subsequently repealed or amended a candidate has obtained credit or may obtain credit in the course for the degree of bachelor of Architecture, the faculty may determine in what further subjects he must pass in order to obtain the degree; and, notwithstanding anything to the contrary, the faculty may exempt him from such subjects of the course as are in its opinion the substantial equivalent of subjects already passed pursuant to the repealed or amended regulations.

9. Candidates may be admitted to the degree of bachelor of Archi- tecture who have—

(a) completed the work and passed, or obtained credit for each Year of the course;

(b) presented certificates as required by section 7.

DEGREE WITH HONOURS

10. A candidate for the degree of bachelor of Architecture with honours shall:

(a) pass the first three Years of the course for the degree of bachelor of Architecture; and

( b ) on completion of the Third Year, before enrolling for the Fourth Year of such course, apply to the faculty and be accepted as a candidate for the degree of bachelor of Architecture with honours.

11. A candidate shall:

(a) attain a standard satisfactory to the faculty in each Year of the course for the degree of bachelor of Architecture following the Third Year; and

.(b) undertake such .deeper studies in selected parts of the Fourth and Fifth Years of the course for the degree of bachelor of Archi-

tecture as the Professorial Board on the recommendation of the faculty, having regard to the candidate's previous training and ability, shall prescribe; and

(c) undertake one subject of the course for any other degree or diploma, which subject shall be approved by the faculty.

12. A candidate who has fulfilled the requirements of sections 10 and 11 may be admitted to the degree of bachelor of Architecture with honours.

[TEMPORARY REGULATION

1. Notwithstanding anything to tlie contrary a candidate who under any regulation or regulations in force on the 1st day of December, 1970, has passed in any of the subjects of the course for the degree of bachelor of Architecture may complete tlie requirements for that degree upon such terms as the faculty may determine.

2. Any determination made by the faculty pursuant to the last pre- ceding section may be modified or varied by the Professorial Board on the apphcation of the candidate concemed.

3. This temporary regulation shall expire on the Slst day of Decem- ber, 1980.]
