Abstract

Jatropha curcas meal (JCM) is potential as poultry feed due to its rich in nutrients content (24.71% protein). Fermentation of JCM using Rhizopus oligosporus decreased the phorbolester, but the crude fiber and phytic acid were still high. The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the effect of feeding fermented JCM using Rhizopus oligosporus supplemented with cellulase and phytase on percentace of carcass and giblets of kampong chickens. The experiment used 40 birds of 200 kampong chickens which were reared from day old chicks up to 10 weeks of age. This experiment used completely randomized design with 5 treatment diets and 4 replications, each replication used 10 birds. The diets were: T0 (control diet, without JCM), T1 (the diet contained 5% untreated JCM), T2 (the diet contained 5% fermented JCM and cellulase 200 ml/ton), T3 (the diet contained 5% fermented JCM and 1000 FTU phytase), and T4 (the diet contained 5% fermented JCM and cellulase 200 ml/ton and 1000 FTU phytase). The parameters observed were percentage of carcass, heart, liver, spleen, kidney, gizzard and pancreas of 6 and 10 weeks old of the birds. The results showed that feeding untreated or fermented JCM 5% did not influence the percentage of carcass and giblets of 6 weeks old as well as of 10 weeks old kampong chickens, except for the gizzard of 10 weeks old. The gizzard of the T3 was higher (p<0.05) than that of the control. It was concluded that feeding untreated as well as fermented Jatropha curcas 5% was safe for the kampong chickens.

the seed kernels contans 31-34.5% proten (Martnez –Herrera et al., 2006). The gross energy of kernels ranged from 31.1 to 31.6 MJ/kg DM, and the levels of amno acds, except lysne, were hgher than that of the FAO/WHO reference proten for a fve year old chld on a dry matter bass (Martnez –Herrera et al., 2006). The avalablty of ths rch nutrents s lmted by toxns and antnutrents contaned n the meal. These toxc and antnutrents nclude curcn(lectn), tannn, trypsn nhbtors, phytate, saponn and phorbolesters (Francs et al., 2006). Apart from these, phorbolesters that are present at hgh levels n the kernels have been dentfed as the man toxc agent responsble for toxcty (Makkar et al., 1997). Untreated

Jatropha curcas meal was toxc to rats, mce and rumnants (Becker and Makkar, 1998) as well as to poultry (Sumat et al., 2007). Its need to detoxfy the JCM n order to fully ultlze of the meal. Sumat et al. (2007) conducted varous treatments (physcal, combnaton of chemcal + physcal, and bologcal) to detoxfy Indonesan

Jatropha curcas meal as poultry feed. Fermentaton usng Rhizopus oligosporus was the best method to detoxfy the toxns and thus ncreasng the nutrttve value of the Jatropha curcas meal for poultry. However, the crude fber and phytc acd of the meal were stll hgh. Poultry can not dgest fber, especally cellulose, even the fber could nterfere other nutrents contaned n the feed. Sng (2008) reported that phytc acd s an ant-nutrtonal consttuen of plant derved feeds. As a reactve anon, t forms a wde varety of nsoluble salts wth mneral ncludng phosphorus, calcum, znc, magnesum and copper. Therefor, the objectve of ths experment from day old chcks up to 10 weeks of age. The JCM was fermented usng Rhizopus oligosporus. Ths experment used completely randomzed desgn wth 5 treatment dets and 4 replcatons, each replcaton used 10 brds. The dets were: T0 (control det, wthout JCM), T1 (the det contaned 5% untreated JCM), T2 (the det contaned 5% fermented JCM and cellulase 200 ml/ton), T3 (the det contaned 5% fermented JCM and 1000 FTU phytase), and T4 (the det contaned 5% fermented JCM and cellulase 200 ml/ton and 1000 FTU phytase). The composton of expermental dets s presented on Table 1.

Results and Dscusson

Fermentaton JCM usng Rhizopus oligosporus decreased phorbolesters, tryp-sn nhbtors, phytc acd, and saponn. Feedng untreated or fermented JCM 5% n the dets dd not nfluence the percentage of carcass and gblets of 6 weeks old (Table 2) as well as of 10 weeks old (Table 3) kampong chckens, except for the gzzard of 10 weeks old. The gzzard of the T3 was hgher (p<0.05) than that of the Table 1. The composton of the expermental dets

control. The ncreasng of gzzard was due to hgher crude fber n the det of T3, .e. 5.65% compared to the control det, .e. 3.86%. Feedng 5% of untreated as well as fermented JCM were safe for the lver, heart, kdney, pancreas, and other gblets of the kampong chckens. ment contaned 24,33 µg/g phorbolesters and the fermented meal contaned 15.28 µg/g phorbolesters.

Feedng hgh phorbolesters Jatropha curcas meal at the level of 5% n the det to the brolers caused 100% mortalty at the age of 22 days and t damaged the lver as well as kdney (Sumat et al., 2007)

Conclusons

It was concluded that feedng untreated as well as fermented jatropha curcas meal 5% n the det was safe for the kampong chckens.
