PENGANTAR REDAKSI Assalamu’alaikum Wr. Wb

Salah satu tujuan berdirinya STAI Syekh Maulana Qori sebagaimana secara eksplisit tercermin dalam Surat Keputusan Menteri Agama Republik Indonesia Nomor:

488 Tahun 2002 tentang status STAI Syekh Maulana Qori adalah untuk mengembangkan dan menyebarluaskan ilmu pengetahuan agama Islam serta mengupayakan penggunaannya untuk meningkatkan taraf kehidupan masyarakat dan memperkaya kebudayaan nasional. Untuk mengembangkan dan menyebarluaskan ilmu pengetahuan ini lebih lanjut di atur dalam Permendiknas nomor: 22 Tahun 2011 tentang Terbitan Berkala.

Dengan demikian, STAI Syekh Maulana Qori tidak hanya dituntut agar mengembangkan ilmu pengetahuan terutama ilmu-ilmu keislaman dan kemasyarakatan melalui kegiatan pembelajaran, penelitian, dan menyebarluaskannya. Berdasarkan amanat tersebut, pimpinan STAI Syekh Maulana Qori telah mengambil kebijakan yang mengarah kepada peningkatan mutu intelektual akademik dosen STAI Syekh Maulana Qori melalui penerbitan jurnal berkala ilmiah, dan untuk pengelolaannya diberikan pada Pusat Penelitian.

Sosio Akademika: Jurnal Pendidikan Islam dan Sosial Keagamaan adalah salah satu jurnal ilmiah berkala, yang bertujuan pertama, untuk meningkatkan kemampuan akademik para dosen, karyawan, guru, ilmuan maupun cendekiawan dalam menulis karya ilmiah yang lebih baik sesuai dengan kaidah sistematika jurnal terakreditasi. Kedua, dapat menjadi wadah pembelajaran menulis bagi dosen-dosen pemula dan karyawan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan mereka dalam aspek keterampilan menulis ilmiah. Ketiga, menambah khazanah jurnal yang ada di lingkungan STAI Syekh Maulana Qori untuk pengembangan citra diri sebagai lembaga perguruan tinggi Islam yang ada di Provinsi Jambi.

Sosio Akademika: Jurnal Pendidikan Islam dan Sosial Keagamaan ini diperuntukkan bagi “mahasiswa baru dan lama”, dosen, karyawan dan peminat informasi- informasi terapan maupun filosofis tentang pendidikan, sosial, bahasa serta budaya yang mengakar pada ilmu keislaman. Oleh karena itu fokus tulisannya lebih banyak menyentuh pada “Pendidikan Islam dalam arti luas dan persoalan sosial kemasyarakatan serta terdapat pula beberapa tulisan yang membahas tentang syari’ah sebagai salah satu keilmuan dalam Islam”.

Pada kesempatan ini tim redaksi mengucapkan alhamdulillahirobbil ‘alamin yang mana jurnal Sosio Akademika STAI SMQ Bangko telah berjalan pada tahun ke-11, seiring dengan ini diterbitkan pula jurnal Vol. 11, No. 01, Maret 2018. Yang merupakan semangat ke arah pengembangan yang lebih baik.

Saran dan masukan dari semua pihak sangat kami harapkan demi terwujudnya tujuan dan cita-cita mulia kita bersama. Semoga kita dapat berkarya lebih baik lagi di masa mendatang. Demi kemajuan civitas akademika STAI Syekh Maulana Qori.

THE EFFECT OF GENIUS LEARNING STRATEGY TOWARD STUDENTS’

VOCABULARY MASTERY AT THE GRADE XI SMK N 3 MERANGIN IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR OF 2016

ABSTRACT

Abstract: Teaching English as foreign language for Indonesian students takes rather differently from the teaching of Indonesian. It is because students to some extent have had special concept of their native language that is different from the English. As the most important foreign language in Indonesia, English became one of the compulsory subjects in junior high school, senior high school and at university. As the result, the government makes effort to improve the quality of English teaching. SMK N 3 Merangin is one of vocational high school in Merangin . The student will be ready to work and enter companies after finishing study.

But, in fact the students’ achievements of XI grade were still unsatisfactory when comparing the results with KKM that was 65. The complete scores of the students can be seen in the following table below

This study uses quantitative research experiment with connecting two variables, namely genius learning strategy variables as independent variables, and student 'vocabulary as the dependent variable. The study population was all class XI student of SMK N 3 Merangin listed in the Academic Year 2013/2014 consists of two classes of 65 students. Sample in the sample population used is because no more than 100 people. Selected sample is class XI TKJ as experimental class XI and class TKR as a control class. Data was collected using a test technique to get a post test.

Results of post-test analysis of the data obtained on average The average results of English learning students in the experimental class is 74.44, variance and standard deviation 298.19 17:27 later the control class is 65.80, 40 145 variance and standard deviation of 6336. To test the significance of the results of the study, then tested the similarity of two on average, Result hypothesis test is perfect t> t table or 4.159> 1.671, so H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted, it can be concluded that there is a significant positive effect on vocabulary mastery on the subject of learning procedure text by using genius strategy learning method than using speech.

Key word: student’ vocabulary, genius learning strategy, speech method.

INTRODUCTION

There are four skills in study English: speaking, reading, writing and listening. In mastering these skills, students have to learn vocabulary. Most of human knowledge and culture are store and transmitted in language. People can not express their thought and ideas without language. In the school, the student

It can be said, vocabulary is an important part of language ability to make communication runs effectively.

SMK N 3 Merangin is one of vocational high school in Merangin . The student will be ready to work and enter companies after finishing study. But, in fact the students’ achievements of XI grade were still unsatisfactory when comparing the results with KKM that was 65. The complete scores of the students can be seen in the following table below

KKM set by SMK N 3 Merangin was at 65. From the table above there were only 37% of students who have been complete while the remaining 62% of students have not been complete. There were 45 students incomplete, 27 student were complete, from total were 72 students with average score was 55.2 at the class XI TKJ, and then average score 56.0 at grade XI TKR. Based on the experience of researcher PPL (praktek pengalaman lapangan) in August 2016 at SMK N 3 Merangin, this was happened because of the lack of vocabulary mastery. Many students got some difficulties in vocabulary mastery, the students have little vocabulary mastery and lack interest in learning, and the students were difficult in memorizing new vocabulary mastery, such as finding a new word, synonyms, antonym, and word formations. In this case, mastering vocabulary can be studied from teaching and learning process. The technique used by the teacher was less variety, so the students were bored in learning English. Based on the explanation above, the problems are identifying as follow: 1. The students have lack of vocabulary mastery. 2. The student difficulties in memorizing new vocabulary mastery. 3. The students were confused about synonym, antonym, and word formations. 4. The technique of the teacher used was less variety, so the students were bored in learning English.

From the explanation above, researcher will find out the effect of genius learning strategy toward the student’s vocabulary mastery. Researcher interested in studying this problem in a thesis proposal entitled “The Effect of Genius Learning Strategy toward Students’ Vocabulary Mastery at the Grade XI SMK N 3 Merangin in the Academic Year 2012/2013”

1. Concept of Vocabulary

Vocabulary is one of the four language components, which are spelling, grammar, phonology and vocabulary. It is an important element that cannot be

separated from each other in language learning process, Since English as foreign language becomes an international language. No wonder, it becomes so important for foreign language learners to learn and master on it that it is a basic element of a language used before learning more about the foreign language. It happens when one who is learning a language has a great mastery on vocabulary,

To get further understanding about vocabulary, Donna Young (In Nugroho 2007:10) explains that vocabulary is the study of:

a. The meanings of words

Many words have several different meanings each, study the meanings of the words and the part of speech.

b. How the words are used

Study the words in context, apply what you learn by writing sentences with your words.

c. Root words, prefixes, suffixes

Studying these will aid in the study of vocabulary.

Based on the statement above, researcher defines vocabulary as knowledge of words. Vocabulary is important to some skills such as reading, listening, writing, and speaking. Vocabulary will be not only focused on learning process which leads to improve the students’ mastery of language. Furthermore, vocabulary will lead them know about a culture education by looking at its meaning, where vocabularies product learned is completely different from Indonesian language.

2. Concept of Genius Learning

Genius learning or more accurately described as a holistic learning is a term used to describe a series of practical approaches to improving learning outcomes. Efforts to improve this is achieved by using the knowledge derived from disciplines such as knowledge about how the brain works, how memory works, motivation, self concept, personality, emotions, feelings, thoughts, noting technical style, and technique other study (Gunawan, 2007: 2).

Basic of genius learning strategy is accelerated learning method. Other name such as quantum learning method, quantum teaching method, super learning method. It is one purpose how to make the learning process to be efficient, effective and fun. On the Genius Learning, if the students can be motivate and taught the right way. With respect uniqueness students so they can achieve a maximum learning. The approach used in the Genius Learning helps students to understand their strengths and weaknesses.

3. Teaching Vocabulary for Vocational High School

Teaching English to vocational high school students as a local content is the students are expected to have skills of the language in simple English with emphasis on listening, speaking, reading, and writing skill using selected topic related to their environmental needs.

The topic is procedure of text. Those topics are so familiar with students that may practice it every day when they attend to their school. So, it is easier for them to perform and absorb the words given which are about things inside the class and things around the school.

RESEARCH METHOD

In this research researchers used quantitative research to take experimental research method specifications, which can be interpreted as the research methods used to find the effect of a particular treatment over another in controlled conditions. According to Airasian (2000:367) Experimental research that can test hypotheses to establish cause and effect relationships. In an experimental study, the research manipulation at least one independent variable, control other relevant variables, and observes the effect on one or more variables. In this study, using two sample classes that control class and the experimental class, the class control only as a comparison while in the experimental class will be given a stimulus strategy that ended with a genius learning vocabulary mastery test.

Type of experimental design used is True Experimental Design in specification Posttest-Only Control Design. Design, there are two groups, the first group was given treatment (X) and the other group did not. Given treatment group called the experimental group, in this study the treatment given by Genius Learning Strategy, which was not given treatment group called the control group, the treatment given by the speech method. After the class finished learning experiment and control classes are given a test to see vocabulary mastery.

Technique of collecting data use treatment, and post-test. The test is design as an objective test. The researcher uses the test instrument take from Effective Communication an Integrated Course of English for Vocational High School. Treatment conducts in 3 times by applying teaching genius learning strategy. The teaching and learning materials are about English vocabulary in topic procedure text. The last step is applying post-test after the treatment given. The material or items design for pre-test are the same as the post-test items. According to Arikunto (2010:192) “Instrumen adalah alat pada waktu

penelitian menggunakan suatu metode”. It’s mean that the instrument is a tool at the time of the study using a method. In this study the objective test instrument. Research instrument is a data collection tool that is used to obtain primary data in the form of achievement test sheet. The test is used to measure the ability of individuals, both in the field of general knowledge and skills as a result of learning. Achievement test is a test to measure the learning outcomes of a given cognitive aspects after the activity is completed experiments.

After doing the test trials, the activities continued with item analysis to see whether or not a problem. There are several things that need to be investigated in the analysis about the item:

1. Test Validity

According Arikunto (2006:168) explains that "validity is a measure of the degree-level instrument validity or validity of something". Said to be valid if a test can measure exactly what is to be measured. To determine the validity of the questions used formula Poduct Moment Arikunto Pearson (2010:213), namely:

Σx = the Sum of All the Scores.

Σx2 = The Sum of The Square; Square Each Score and Add Up All The Squares.

Σy = the Sum of Even Items.

Σxy = the Sum of Multiple of Score from Odd and Even.

2. Reliabilities

According Arikunto (2010:221) “reliabel artinya dapat dipercaya, jadi dapat diandalkan”. It’s mean that "a reliable means to be believed, so

Reliability refers to the notion that something instrument trustworthy enough to be used as a means of collecting data because the instrument is good. To determine the reliability of the formula used by the proposed Alpha Riduwan (2010:115):

After implementing the learning process by using conventional teaching methods in class control and genius learning strategy explaining the experimental class, then held a final test (post-test) to the second class.

The steps in testing requirements analysis as follows:

Hypothesis Testing

Based on the proposed research hypotheses, to test the hypothesis if the requirements are met then the analysis using parametric statistics, and if the test conditions are not met then the analysis using non-parametric statistics, then:

Data on the results of an experimental class students learn English and grade control obtained after implementing the learning process in the procedure text materials through final testing in the form of 20 objective questions Implementation of the final test followed by 36 students in the experimental class and 31 students in the control class. Descriptions of final test data are given in the second grade sample are presented in the form of the students with a range of 1-100.

To test the hypothesis before drawing conclusions, the data were analyzed first. Hypothesis test used is the t-test. Both sets of data have a homogeneous variance. Then to see if the hypothesis is accepted or rejected the formula used t-test:

So that price thitung> t table or 4.159> 1.671, so H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted, it can be concluded that there is a significant positive effect on vocabulary mastery on the subject learning procedure text by using genius learning strategy than using speech methods. that there is a slight positive significant effect on learning genius strategy toward students' vocabulary mastery grade XI SMK N 3 Merangin academic year 2013/2014 can be accepted.

Differences in student learning outcomes using the genius and learning strategy that uses speech methods can be seen from the average value of its class. The average results of English learning students in the experimental class was 74.44, variance and standard deviation 17.27 298.19 later the control class is 65.80, 40.145 variance and standard deviation of 6.336. To test the significance of the results of the study, then tested the similarity of two on average, for homogeneous data is then used formula

In the calculation of the t-test states that thitung higher than ttabel atau 4.159> 1.671, with signification level = 0,05) dan dk = 65.

With thitung higher than ttable it is evident that the learning outcomes of students who are taught using learning genius of the strategy very well taught with speech methods. Based on this it can be concluded that the hypothesis is put forward that there is a slight positive significant effect on learning genius strategy toward students' vocabulary mastery grade XI SMK N 3 Merangin academic year 2013/2014 can be accepted.

It can be concluded that there is a significant positive effect on vocabulary mastery on the subject learning procedure text by using genius learning strategy than using speech methods. That there is a slight positive significant effect on learning genius strategy toward students' vocabulary mastery grade XI SMK N 3 Merangin academic year 2013/2014 can be accepted.

SUGGESTION 1. For Teachers

a. One way to improve students' mathematics learning outcomes is to use a learning strategy genus learning strategy,

b. Teachers should give more priority activity or student involvement in the learning process.

2. For Schools

Schools should support, motivate and equip the necessary learning facilities as an effort to improve student learning outcomes in schools.

3. For Researchers

The research strategy chosen is genius learning strategy learning strategy suggested other methods to examine the effect on learning English.
