CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION A. Background of The Study

English is a foreign language that is frequently used in communication by people and most countries around the world. English is used in every aspect of human beings, it is used for communication in school, the workplace, and in social involvement. In Indonesia, the time allocation to learn English is very limited. As a result, most of the people is hard to communicate using English.

People have to find out to learn English easily and nicely. On the other counterary almost every school in Indonesia provides a limited opportunity to practice speaking English. Some students may be satisfied with the materials that presented in class. But, there were students who want to gain more knowledge and practice at another time because they did not satisfied when they got material just in class. They also seek the activity which can improve their skill and knowledge for exams from informal and non-formal education.

There are three of kinds education, such as formal, informal and non- formal education. Formal education is defined as an organized educational program that progresses from elementary school to the university level. Informal education is an education outside of formal schools like the family and the environment education. Therefore non-formal education is activity outside of the school activity. Many students follow non-formal education. It is an alternative to support the students to be more practice is through programs outside the class. In

the English context, there is non formal education the name is the English Club Program.

English club is a group of people members who meet regularly to practice English. They have several scheduled meetings to practice English between the club members. There were many programs in English club, such as playing of games, conversation class, debate, storytelling, singing a song and so many others. There are four basic languages learned in English such as writing, reading, listening, and speaking. In English club, speaking is more preferred.

Speaking is one of the most crucial aspects of English skills that students should acquire. The purpose of speaking ability is to express an idea, someone's feelings, or a notion in a spontaneous manner. Speaking is a language art of communication engagement with another person. It is really difficult to master.

Speaking skill is directly related to listening skill, in speaking act, students must listen first and then speak up, because speaking is more than just learning and memorizing written lines.it is also a spontaneous way to communicate the students' ideas verbally.

Generally, in school, most of the students are afraid of making mistakes in their performance. Because the student often have incorrect pronunciation, lack of confidence to share their opinion and ideas, afraid of making grammatical error, have uncomfortable feelings in pronouncing the words or sentences, lack vocabulary, and so many others. With enrolling in English club program, the student can be more enjoy and explore themselves in English practice. So that students can gradually increase their ability to communicate in English.

3

In this research, the researcher focuses in speaking activities in English Club. The most important feature of speaking activity is providing an opportunity for the students to get individual meanings across and utilize every area of knowledge they have. In addition, a few research studies both strengths and weaknesses in joining English Club and its impact on certain tries to find out what are speaking skills dominated by students after joining English Club and how for the students perceive English Club improve their speaking skills. This study also provides consideration weather English Club can be an alternative and effective way to improve speaking fluency outside the class.

Based on Previous Study from Wahyuni et. al. (2019) in journal entitled Improving Speaking Skill Through Speaking Club viewed from students‟

perceptions. The participant of this study was 10 students who join English speaking club in UIN sunan ample Surabaya. The result of this reseach indicated that most of the student who join speaking club have good speaking improvement and their speaking such as an improvement of pronounciation, vocabulary, and fluency in their speaking.

At least with English Club, the students also increase their confidence to speak up and show up the public. That is the evidence why the quality of English Club program is better than others.
