Introduction

This is the second special issue for the Second Conference on ‘‘Logic and the Theory of Games and Decisions’’ (LOFT2), which took place at the International Centre for Economics Research (ICER) in Turin in December 1996. The first issue appeared in this journal, volume 36 (1998), No.1. The history and background of the Loft conferences can be found in the introduction to the first issue.

This issue has a greater variety of papers: expected and nonexpected utility theories, probabilistic considerations of beliefs and knowledge, model-theoretic considerations of knowledge and communication, and epistemic logic approaches to Nash equilibrium. These reflect possible approaches to foundational issues in logic, games and decisions, which were intensively discussed in the Loft2 conference.

The three guest editors would like, again, to express their gratitude to Herve Moulin, Editor-in-Chief of Mathematical Social Sciences, for devoting two special issues of the Journal to LOFT2 and to ICER for funding and hosting LOFT2. The guest editors would also like to thank the referees for their invaluable help and the authors for their cooperation.

We analyze the existence and order structure of equilibria for this class of games, in which the set of feasible joint decisions is a lattice, and exploit their monotonicity

Second, the Cournot equilibrium is characterized in terms of marginal costs, and this facilitates the study of two-stage Cournot games of cost manipulations, where in the first
