HyperTerm inal is a program t hat you can use t o connect t o ot her com put ers, I nt ernet t elnet sit es, bullet in board syst em s ( BBSs) , online services, and host com put ers, using eit her your m odem or a null m odem cable.
Though using HyperTerm inal w it h a BBS t o access inform at ion on rem ot e com put ers is a pract ice t hat has becom e less com m on wit h t he availabilit y of t he World Wide Web, HyperTerm inal is st ill a useful m eans of com m unicat ing w it h your hardw are or exam ining your connect ion w it h ot her sit es.
HyperTerm inal records t he m essages passed t o and from t he com put er or serv ice on t he ot her end of your connect ion. Therefore, it can serve as a valuable t roubleshoot ing t ool when set t ing up and using your m odem . To m ake sure t hat your m odem is connect ed properly, or t o view your m odem 's set t ings, you can send com m ands t hrough HyperTerm inal and check t he result s. HyperTerm inal has back- scroll funct ionalit y w hich allows you t o look at received t ext t hat has scrolled off t he screen.
I f you are having difficult y m aking an int ernat ional call or ot her connect ion, you can use HyperTerm inal t o dial your m odem m anually. This w ay, if you need t o speak w it h an operat or t o get t he call t hrough, you can dial out using your t elephone.
You can use HyperTerm inal t o t ransfer large files from a com put er ont o your port able com put er using j ust a serial port , rat her t han going t hrough t he process of set t ing your port able com put er up on a net work.
I f you are a program m er, you can use HyperTerm inal t o help you debug source code from a rem ot e t erm inal. And of course, you need HyperTerm inal t o com m unicat e w it h older charact er- based com put ers.
To se t u p a n e w conn e ct ion
1. On t he File m enu, click N e w Con n e ct ion.
2. I n t he N a m e box, t ype a nam e t hat describes t he connect ion. 3. I n t he I con box, click t he appropriat e icon, and t hen click OK.
4. I n t he Con n e ct To dialog box, ent er t he inform at ion for t he phone num ber you want t o dial, and t hen click OK.
5. I f you are using a m odem and want t o change your dialing propert ies, click
D ia lin g Pr ope r t ie s, m ake your changes, and t hen click OK. 6. To dial t he call, click D ia l.

• To use t he Com m and Prom pt t o creat e a new t elnet connect ion in HyperTerm inal, go t o Program Files\ Windows NT on t he volum e where Windows 2000 is inst alled, and t ype h ype r t r m .e x e / t <t e ln e t a ddr e ss> [ :<por t> ]. The t elnet address is t he address of t he connect ion you want t o creat e, and port is t he num ber ( 23 by default ) of t he port you w ant t he connect ion t o use.
