Abstract
The study aimed to find out the students’ language preferences in Advanced Grammar classes of English Departments, Satya Wacana Christian University. The study addresses the following questions: a) What are the students’ language preferences in Advanced Grammar classes? b) What are the reasons for such language preferences? The data were collected from 114 students. The data was analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively. Open-ended questionnaire were used to collect the data and there found four languages preferred by Advanced Grammar students: “English only”, “Indonesian only”, mixed language and no language preference. There results of this study proved that mother tongue had both positive and negative effects. Pedagogical implications of the findings will also be addressed at the end of the paper.
