The primary aim of this research was to investigate the influence of using guessing game technique on students' vocabulary mastery. This research is quantitative research conducted on the seventh grade of junior high school 9 Metro involving 30 students as the samples. The findings of the study indicate that there is a positive and significant influence of using guessing game technique on students' vocabulary mastery, and alternative hypotheses are accepted. According to the result, students need to master guessing game technique to master vocabulary.

Tujuan utama dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menguji pengaruh penggunaan teknik permainan tebak-tebakan terhadap penguasaan kosa kata bahasa Inggris siswa. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian ini, siswa harus mampu menguasai teknik permainan tebak-tebakan untuk menguasai kosa kata.

Background of the Study

Teaching English is to facilitate students' ability to communicate with the speakers of the language both in written and spoken form through the language in question. Until now, we can see that English is still difficult to master, in fact, many problems in the vocabulary of SMP N 9 Metro, that is, firstly, students have less vocabulary in learning English, secondly, students are afraid of making mistakes in the use vocabulary, the last, the technique used in the learning process makes the students bored. Based on data from the pre-survey, the writer found that many students did not achieve good enough results.

Activities between students and teachers, as well as students and students. So, using this technique, students are expected to acquire a lot of vocabulary. Based on the above problem, the writer conducted a research entitled the impact of using the guessing game technique on the vocabulary mastery of students in the seventh grade of SMP N 9 metro in the academic year 2016/2017.

Referring to the data above, we can assume that this has caused the students to still have poor vocabulary and they think that English was a difficult lesson.

In this research, the author used written test consisting of essay test to know the influence of guessing games in teaching vocabulary. From the definition above, the author can assume that guessing game technique is the implementation of some activities to get the learning objective with the guessing information such as picture, activity or sentence, but expressly withholds that information. At the end, the player with the most tricks is the winner.16 Based on procedure of guessing game above, the author performed that procedure in this research. d.

It means that the guessing game used in teaching vocabulary or teaching English also gets disadvantages, especially the teacher. Based on the figure above, it can be described that the use of a guessing game technique is possible to influence the mastery of the students' vocabulary.

Hypothesis Formulation

There is a positive and significant influence of using the guessing game technique on students' vocabulary mastery in the seventh grade of SMP N 9 Metro. In the seventh grade of SMP N 9 Metro, there is no positive and significant effect of using the guessing game technique on vocabulary mastery.

Statistical Hypothesis

This research was a quantitative experiment research type and was conducted at the seventh grade of SMP N 9 Metro, where the location is Piagam Jakarta Street, Mulyosari Village of the western Metro District, Lampung. According to Daniel Muijs, a quantitative research is the research that explains phenomena by collecting numerical data that will be analyzed using mathematically based methods (especially statistics)20. In this research, the author used the quantitative research included in descriptive quantitative and in the form of experimental design.

Therefore, the author in this research uses finishing class which is class 7.1 of the seventh grade of SMP N 9 Metro in the academic year 2016/2017. The author used pre-test and post-test, pre-test was conducted first in this research. This research aimed to investigate whether there is any positive and significant influence of the use of guessing game technique on students' vocabulary mastery.

This technique required the writer to choose the example based on certain reasons or certain purposes.

The Operational Definition of Variables

This technique required the author to select the sample based on some reasons or some purpose. dependent variable).25 It is the big variable that one hopes to be able to investigate. Independent variable in this research is guessing game technique which can help students to learn English. To know how much the influence of using guessing game technique, the author used written test that consists of essay test.

The indicators of the independent variable are: 1) students have a lot of vocabulary, 2) students can ask simple questions, 3) students can guess the object 4) students can make simple sentences. Furthermore, the writer collected the data using a written test which is a test composed of essays. The guessing game technique can be said to be successful if the students' vocabulary mastery score is more than the standard minimum of 73.

According to Sing the dependent variable is the factor which is observed and measured to determine the independent effect. To measure students' vocabulary mastery, the writer used the theory according to Brown in John as follows27. Also, the indicators of the dependent variable are: 1) Students can write a lot of vocabulary, 2) students can make sentences correctly.

Documentation as the method used to extract information from written language or documents (for example, books, magazines, rules, notes, and others). The writer used this method to get the data of school history, profile, total of students and teachers of SMP N 9 Metro in academic year 2016/2017. When collecting the data, the writer observed the learning process of the students and put it in the data paper.

This data consists of the names of students who are actively involved in the learning process. The data was made to know the students' development of the students who have not involved yet.

To investigate whether there is any influence of the use of guessing game technique on the students' vocabulary mastery under the seventh grade of SMP N 9 Metro in academic year 2016/2017, the author analyzed the result of the pre- and post-test used T-test. It is ascertainable since the government of Metro published that Metro is the education city, so the government plans to educate the quality of the school and also to build msny new school in Metro. SMP N 9 Metro was established on 2003, located in Piagam Jakarta street 16 polos Mulyosari, subdistrict of Metro Barat which has wide about 10.800 m2.

Mission: increasing the self-discipline of the teacher, staff and students, creating and conducive, effective and innovative learning condition, motivating the students who optimally empower the academic performance, bring the quality of graduation with the higher standard more than national graduation,. The state of leadership since its establishment in 2003, SMP N 9 Metro experienced leadership turnover than 6 times, it has several principal. The author conducted pre-tests on Tuesday, May 9, 2017 to get to know the students' vocabulary mastery before the treatment.

The result of the students' vocabulary mastery pre-test at 7.1 grade in SMP N 9 Metro. The follow-up test was employed in the last program of this research after giving some treatments to the students. The test used in the current research was of the same type as pre-test, but in the different title and it is more developed.

Therefore, it showed that the result of post test after using guessing game technique can meet students' vocabulary power.

Hypothesis Testing

Then know the critical value of the chi-square that the writer first calculated df, was the degree of freedom. In this research, students were given all the tests individually and in groups. It was useful to know the impact of using the guessing game technique on students' vocabulary mastery from the results of those tests.

This means the alternative hypothesis (Ha) which explains "there is a positive and significant influence of the use of guessing game technique on the students' vocabulary mastery". To determine whether there is a positive and significant influence of the use of guessing game technique for the students' vocabulary mastery under the seventh grade of SMP N 9 Metro in the academic year 2016/2017. First, the author prepared the table and put the data into the formula t-test as below to get "t_observation".

To know the critical value of the t-test (t_table), the writer first calculated the df, df is the degree of freedom. After examining the T-test table using df 29, because 29 is higher than 20 and it is lower than 30, so it is done by interpolation and it can be found that:.

The teachers should use guessing game technique to teach English with different media or some modifications to be more interesting. The principal must support the English learning process by fully preparing the facilitation and instrument. This research is recommended to make the further research on the promotion of the students' vocabulary mastery.

The next researcher can explore guessing game implementation and other variables with different media and learning materials. Hiebert and Kamil Michael L.
