MEMORANDUM

Second, the Targon will be the computer that will replace the current Nixdorf 8890, and the conversion will take place over a 3-5 year time frame. As soon as it is convenient, we would like to organize a demonstration for key members of staff on the Targon computer and the UNIPLEX OA suite.

KIWANIS INTERNATIONAL

Background

Kiwanis International Computer System

Changes Necessitate Study

Original Nixdorf Decision

It was like converting to a new computer and a new operating system in a reasonable amount of time. Kiwanis and Nixdorf representatives determined that converting existing IBM System 3 programs written in RPG would be the easiest and fastest method of transitioning to a new computer.

Nixdorf Purchased By Siemens

The decision to buy Nixdorf was based on a combination of economic and technological reasons. This means that we must be prepared to purchase and install a new computer system and make the required conversion in no more than five years.

Conversion To Another Computer

We have discussed this matter with Nixdorf and although they are not willing to give us a definitive answer, we feel that five years is about what we need to plan for.

Five Year Plan

Computer Evaluation

  • New applications need to be developed on the mainframe
  • Existing applications need enhancement
  • I need to have my files available on disc in multiple sequences
  • Vendors must provide quality service and support at all times
  • It takes too long to respond to my requests for new or revised programs
  • Kiwanis needs a data base program on the mainframe
  • The m,ainframe program language is out-of-date
  • The operating system used by our mainframe cannot be used on any other equipment
  • The present computer mainframe is outdated and should be replaced
  • Information needed from the mainframe on my PC is still not available
  • All users should have access to a state-of-the-art word processing package
  • Kiwanis should be using electronic mail at all levels of the organization
  • We need the ability to share files among users of PC's
  • I need more software in order to be able to do my job
  • We need to do more for district offices and clubs
  • We need to transfer members and addresses from the Key Club Inter- national records as possible prospects for Circle K International
  • Upgrade the present Nixdorf 8890 - Model 50 to a Nixdorf 8890 - Model72
  • Purchase the following software

Ensure that hardware and software suppliers will provide adequate and efficient service and support for at least five years. Secure the hardware and software necessary to fully integrate the mainframe and personal computer systems at all levels of Kiwanis.

Staff Recommendation

Purchase a new Nixdorf Targon - Model 35/50 computer system

Purchase Software, Data Base and Operating System

It is not anticipated that an upgrade to this new computer system will be required for at least three years. Equally important, it is user-friendly and will be easy for our staff to learn.

Some units are being used for accounting or spreadsheet work using Lotus 123, and the Ventura desktop publishing package has recently been introduced.

Conversion

When Kiwanis replaced the IBM System 3 with the Nixdorf computer in 1984-85, an 18-month conversion was required. The time and effort required for conversion depends on the complexity and scope of the changes involved.

REPORT OF THE BOARD CONIIITTEE ON

To seek in the council and through the clubs of the council the achievement of the goals of Kiwanis International as set forth in the constitution. Staff will continue to monitor the cost of the program in accordance with the $3,000 ($1,500 duplication/$1,500 postage) cap on. Finally, in view of the urgent growth-related needs throughout Europe, the committee hopes that every effort will be made to fill this position by January 1, 1991 at the latest.

The committee noted that the recent adoption of the $20 fee for 100 percent club membership registration is an incentive that should increase. convention participation, especially for local clubs. Due to the limited number of available seats in the Anaheim arena, seats for the opening session on Sunday night were also discussed.

Additional discussion addressed the merits of using a single broker in implementing Kiwanis insurance programs. The Committee further recommends that it be $5,000. authorized for capital expenditures and effective at the beginning of the 1990-91 administrative year. overspending in the amount of $9215 in the Account. The majority of card purchases, over 83%, were generated due to telemarketing efforts.

If there is still a negative reaction, Consideration must be given to the continuation of the programme. Future additions to the plan that address other departments will be developed for all aspects of Kiwanis.

The commission assessed that all amendments are acceptable and in accordance with constitutional procedures and requirements. The Committee received a copy of the Circle K International Code of Policies and Procedures as revised by the International Circle K Board 1989-90. The Committee reviewed the proposal of the 1990-91 Builders Club International Committee to establish a reporting system and awards program.

Membership in a Circle K Club will automatically expire on September 30 of the same calendar year. Membership in a Circle K Club will automatically expire on September 30 of the healthy calendar year folla.1in;.
