OCCUPANCY OF NEW BUILDING UNDERWAY

The move into the Preventive Dentistry Research Building has been underway for many days now, and will be completed soon. The formal dedication will be held May 22, 1968. Several nationally known dental authorities have accepted invitations to speak, and a formal program announcement will be made in the near future.

MAXILLOFACIAL PROSTHETICS COURSE SCHEDULED

The fourth postgraduate course in Maxillofacial Prosthetics will be offered May 6th through May 10th.

APR 3 D '68 April 29, 1968 TO ATTEND CONFERENCE Dean Hine and Dr. McDonald will participate in the International Conference on Graduate Education in Dentistry, sponsored by the American Association of Dental Schools, in Chicago on April 30 - May 1. Also attending this meeting will be Joel Hunt, Associate Dean of the Graduate School, and John Ashton, formerly Vice President and Dean of the Graduate School.

PRESENTS PAPER

Mrs. Delores Riczo, Supervisor in the Dental Auxiliary Utilization Program, read a paper at the Sixth National Conference on Dental Auxiliary Utilization held in Chicago, April 16, 1968.

COMMUNITY DENTAL HYGIENE PROGRAM

On March 12th, the second year dental hygiene students started working in a community dental hygiene program in the schools of Montgomery County. A

group of ten students are spending three days each week in the program.

The children in grades one through six will be examined. The ones in grades two and five are receiving a prophylaxis and topical fluoride treatment. Talks on dental health are being given in grades one, three, four, and six. Approximately 4500 children are involved in the program which lasts for ten weeks.

GREEN'S TABLE CLINIC JUDGED OUTSTANDING

Nineteen very excellent student table clinics were presented on the morning of March 20. Mr. Roy Green was

select·ed by the judges to represent I.U.S.D. at the .American Dental Association Meeting to be held in Miami next October.

The winner of the senior presentation will be announced at Honors Day in June.

Four of our student clinicians represented IUSD at the Cincinnati Dental Society program last month, and Mr. Angerman and Mr. Pate were awarded first and second prizes respectively in the Student Clinic Division.

CROWN AND BRIDGE DEPARTMENTAL MEMBERS FILL ACTIVE SCHEDULES Dr Dykema and Dr. Maesaka attended the AADS meeting in San Francisco in March.

Dr. Dykema offered a three-day course in San Juan, Puerto Rico the week of April 22nd.

During the month of April, Dr.

Mumford traveled to Omaha, Nebraska and to the state meeting in Boston, Massachusetts, where he participated in programs.

On April 18th, Dr. Johnston flew to California for the purpose of taking a course in porcelain inlays. He returned to Indiana.polis on April

27.

CONGRATULATIONS

Congratulations are extended to Dr.

and Mrs. Varoujan A. Chalian on the birth of a daughter, Sona Marie, on April 5th.

TESTIMONIAL DINNER

Professor Ralph Phillips was given a testimonial dinner April 25th sponsor- ed by the Indianapolis Section of the IADR and attended by approximately 75 members of the association and faculty.

APPRECIATION

Mrs. Carla Totten of the Dental Hygiene Department wishes to express grateful appreciation to the faculty for the beautiful floral tribute sent in memory of her father~ Carl Porter, who passed away March 23, 1968.

PROFESSOR SWARTZ HONORED Professor Marjorie L. Swartz was presented the Wilmer Souder Award at the annual meeting of the Inter- national Association for Dental Research in San Francisco in March.

This award is the highest honor that can be given for research and competence in this field. Indiana University is the only school where more than one faculty member has been given this award. Professor Ralph Phillips is the other recipient.

NEWS FROM ORAL DIAGNOSIS

Dr. John Hasler spent a week in mid- April in Washington, D. C., where he studied Oral Diagnosis, Oral Medicine and Oral Pathology under Dr. Surindar Bhaskar. This special class was sponsored by the Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

Dr. David Mitchell, Dr. Tomich and Dr. Denis Forest attended the AAOP meeting in Scottsdale, Arizona.

WELCOME

A hearty welcome is extended to Mrs.

Janice Herring on her return to the assisting staff of Oral Pathology.

She assumes the position vacated by Miss Sandra Bush, who left the staff to join that of the Veterans'

Administration Hospital.

The department of Crown and Bridge likewise welcomesa newcomer - Mrs.

Carol Tobias·. She replaces Bonnie Summers who is now a technician trainee in the partial denture laboratory.

Pedodontic Department welcomes a new dental assistant, Ann Marie Eckhart and the new face in the Graduate Office is Louanna White. Welcome.

DR. SHAFER LECTURES

From March 3 - 7, Dr. Shafer was in Washington, D. C. where he coordinated two official visits. He served as guest lecturer at the 15th Annual Armed Forces Institute of Pathology course in Oral Pathology. His topics were "Oral Manifestations of Derma- tologic Lesions" and "Odontogenic Tumors." He also served in his capacity as National Civilian

Consultant in Oral Pathology to the Surgeon-General, U.S. Air Force, at Andrews Air Force Base.

On March 12th, he was guest speaker at the Rush Memorial Hospital in Rushville, Indiana and he presented a lecture, "Diagnosis of Oral Cancer"

at a dinner meeting of the Washtenaw District Dental Society, Ann Arbor, Michigan, on March 19th.

Drs. Shafer, Standish and Whitten attended the annual meeting of the American Academy of Oral Patholog-y held in Scottsdale, Arizona, April 14 - 19. Graduate students Baughman, DeAraujo, Cundiff, Jarrett and Levy also attended this meeting.

The IADR meeting in San Francisco was attended by Drs. Shafer, Standish,

and Whitten. Dr. Whitten and Dr.

Standish (with Mrs. Patricia Clark as co-author) presented papers on the program of this meeting.

DR. BOWERS PARTICIPATES IN PROG!Wfl..S

Radio and TV programs in Indianapolis were highlighted during "Hemophilia Week" (March 9 through 17) by inter- views and presentations appropriate to the cause of focusing public

attention on this form of disability.

On Thursday, March 14th, WXLW Radio's

"Talk of the Town" utilized the services of Dr. Robert Rohn, Hemato- logist, IU Medical School, and Dr.

Donald Bowers of IUSD. On Tuesday, March 12th, Dr. Bowers appeared on the WTTV "Billie Boucher Show."

DEA1"'\J HINE IN WASHINGTON, D. C.

Dr. Maynard K. Hine attended a meeting of the Veterans Administration in Washington, D. C., April 22.

He attended a meeting of the Grants and Allocations Committee of the American Fund for Dental Education on Wednesday, April 24, and on Friday, April 26, he attended a meeting in Chicago of the Region V Health

Advisor/ Committee of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare.

ITEMS OF INTEREST FROM DENTAL DIVISION OF PUBLIC HEALTH

The Dental Caravan, which presents programs of topical interest to component dental societies, featured programs for the Eastern, East Central, and Northwest Societies in recent

weeks. The major topic discussed was concerned with the use of dental

auxiliaries now and in the future, and the discussions were based upon the recent .ADA resolution regarding auxiliaries. The programs were led by a panel composed of Dr. Gorman McKean, Secretary of the Indiana State Board of Dental Examiners, Dr. Robert Shirey, President of the Board, and Dr. Ralph Schimmele, Director of Regional Campuses for the IUSD. Dr.

Gish and Dr. Mercer moderated the panel.

Dr. Victor Mercer recently :presented programs on preventive dentistry procedures for the dental office to the Ben Hur and South Central Dental Societies.

VISITORS TO IUSD

Dr. E. J. Hyde, former graduate student in preventive dentistry and pedodontics, and Director of the

Metropolitan Dental Program in British Columbia, visited the dental school on April 3rd.

Dr. Mooney and Dr.

Rechanik, two dentists from Buenos Aires, Argentina visited the IUSD to review the program in dental auxiliary utilization.

LIBRARY NOTES

Mr. and Mrs. Campbell had a red-letter date on March 19th to greet the docking of the S.S. United States in New York.

Their daughter, Martha, a student at Kalamazoo College was returning from Bonn, Germany where she had been studying for a year on the College's Junior-Year-Abroad program.

Mrs. Helen Campbell flew to San Francisco on March 24th, where she attended the AADS Section on Dental Libraries.

On April 29-30, Mrs. Campbell will be in Chicago to attend the Midwest Regional Group meeting of the Medical Library Association which is meeting in connection with the Tri-State Hospital Assembly. Mrs. Campbell is a member of the executive committee of the Midwest Regional Group.

Miss Lynda Williams, former circulation assistant of the library, has accepted a position in the library of the

Shippensburg State College in Pennsylvania. Miss Williams left the IUSD library in the fall of 1967 to devote full time to study. She will receive her M.L.S. from Indiana University in June.

OPERATIVE DENTISTRY ACTIVITIES During late February and early March Dr. William Gilmore presented two separate courses to the Bi-State Dental Research Group, Hygienists and Dental Assistants of Mattoon, Illinois.

He serves as director to this group.

As a dental consultant in restorative dentistry, he presented a lecture to the dental interns and graduates at Fort Knox, Kentucky on March 5th.

On March 6th, he presented a clinical demonstration on the use of cohesive gold to the same group.

On April 8th, he visited Tufts Univer- sity School of Dental Medicine in Boston where he presented an all-day course on "Progressive Concepts in Operative Dentistry."

FOURTH ANNUAL TEACHING CONFERENCE ANNOUNCED

The Teaching Committee is announcing that the Fourth Annual Teaching Conference will again this year be held at the Spring Mill Inn, Spring Mill State Park, Mitchell, Indiana, beginning at Noon on Thursday,

September 5th and terminating at Noon on Saturday, September 7th. The

Program Committee, headed by Dr. Roland Dykema, reports that an excellent

program is in store for you. In the very near future, the details of the program will be announced. The schedule will be somewhat less crowded than last year, and you will be pleased to know that the rooms in the Inn have been air conditioned.

Thursday evening promises to be an exciting event, as Coach John Pont has agreed to talk to us about the 1968 football season.

Mark your calendars now and plan to participate!

IN BIRMINGHAM

Dr. Paul Starkey is in Birmingham,

· Alabama speaking to the Alabama Society of Dentistry for Children on Tuesday morning, April 30th.

He will be speaking to a general session of the Alabama State Dental Association on Wednesday afternoon.

May 19-23, Dr. Starkey will be

attending a special training session on nunderstanding the Underprivileged Child" at the ADA Building in

Chicago.
