LITERATURE REVIEW

Variable Research and Operational Definitions

Student motivation is the purpose of student behavior, the desire to achieve a specific goal and a joyful attitude to activities. From the above definition, Harris mentions that there are several indicators for the Speaking following:.

Motivation Definition

Motivation is intrinsic if the goal is closely related to the learning situation with the needs and goals of the students to acquire the values contained in the lesson. Students are motivated to learn only to master the values contained in the material, not because of other desires, such as the desire for praise, high grades or awards, etc.

Theory of Speaking Skill

Someone who has good fluency will perform or use the language easily and quickly in the right language sequence. e) Comprehension refers to the ability to understand the speaker's intention and general meaning. Good comprehension refers to a good understanding. It is the students' speaking performance that exercises some phonological and grammatical aspects of language. The students should at least know the pronunciation, vocabulary and language functions they will be using.

When students are ready and prepared for the activity, they can use the language properly.

Theory of Storytelling

As the understanding of storytelling has been explained above, it can be concluded that storytelling is actually an activity of sharing what is on the heart. Multimodal stories can include both oral and written components, but will also include other forms of expression in their telling of the story, such as pictures, sounds or videos. 34;Calvin and Hobbes," and even illuminated manuscripts such as original copies of "The Canterbury Tales."

For Crawford, an interactive story's audience is not distanced from the story as it would be with oral, written or even multimodal stories.27.

The Implementation of Teaching Speaking Practice by Using

In this session, researchers and teachers also assessed the extent to which the students' ability to speak English and also their motivation when storytelling takes place. After their performance in the classroom, the teacher made a conversation with their students about the speaking exercise with easy games to cut a student's ability to hear stories that have been told by the narrator. The teacher gave 2 games in the last activity, namely comprehension questions and true or false, both these games aim to see how well the student understands hearing their friends speak English.

Previous Studies

Furthermore, there is also a study entitled "The use of storytelling methods to develop English language skills", where it is found that storytelling techniques have a great effect on the learning of English students (Samantaray, 2014: 44). Then there is also a study titled "Using storytelling techniques to improve English language skills of elementary school students" by Fikriah, which presents students' English skills improved through storytelling.

The Hypothesis

RESEARCH METHOD

Time and Place of the Research

According to Creswell, the natural environment in data collection is one of the qualitative research characteristics of the approach.32 The choice of the right place is important in the study, so it could have influenced the results of the research with a period of 6 meetings per month. Therefore, the researcher chose the SMP Negeri 03 center in Bengkulu as the background of the study.

Population, Sample and Sampling

From all the members of the population group, only a few groups were selected as an area sample using as many lottery classes as there were classes and then randomly selected into 2 classes. From some sample groups of the area, determine which students are the experimental and control classes. According to Etta, he said: "A population is a space of generalization that consists of a subject and an object of research with a certain quality and characteristics.

In this study, the population sample was taken from two classes, there is an experimental class that used storytelling technique, and the control class used picture storytelling in SMPN 03 Bengkulu Tengah.

The Technique of Data Collection and Instruments

In the second speaking test, the researcher was treated as an experimental class; the control received no treatment. In this class, the researcher tells the students about the narrative text or fiction of the story to be learned. In this study, the researcher used questionnaire distribution as one of the data collection techniques.

After getting the data, the researcher can analyze the results of the questionnaire using SPSS or Microsoft Excel.

Research Procedure

According to Suharsimi Arikunto, the documentation method is a method used to find data about things or variables in the form of notes, books, newspapers, magazines, inscriptions, minutes, agendas, photos and so on.39 So, it means documentation of a method, that can collect student data from in-class learning activities and also student performance. The first step before the speech act itself is the introduction of new vocabulary contained in the story. b) The research at these steps can write 'story titles' on the board and ask their students to imagine the titles. Then the researcher gives 2 games in the last activity which are comprehension questions and true or false, both these games aim to see the extent of students' understanding in listening to their friends speak in English.

But in true or false games, research is required to provide true or false options about the story that was told earlier.

Data Analysis

After the whole process of the procedure, the researcher got conclusions and information and could also answer questions about the problem and draw conclusions.

Unit Analysis

So, the researchers used Modus as a technique to see the scores of students who dominated in answering the questionnaire. Deviations' standard, is one of the measurements to find out how much there is a deviation in a data distribution. The researchers therefore used the Deviation Standard as a technique to see how skewed the distribution of questionnaire data is.

So the researchers used the upper and lower quartile techniques to look to analyze the location of the quartile scores.

Prerequisite Test

  • Hypothesis Testing

The researcher was therefore used several formulas to analyze how many children often appear with their scores after answering the questionnaire. In analyzing the data. The next step was that the sample should be appropriate, consisting of participants who best represent or have knowledge of the research topic. The data collected from the questionnaire is confirmed by data collection from interviews to see if the data support each other or not.

After this, the researcher can get information about the level of students' motivation one by one in the class, and the last step is to look at the test contours that see if there is an impact that the students experience when they receive treatment for speaking practice.

Contrast Test

Based on the data in table 4.1 in the frequency distribution above, it can be seen that the motivation for learning English among students of class VIII B using the storytelling method is most often in the interval class 85 - 90 as many as 2 students. Based on the results in Figure 4.1 in the frequency distribution above, it can be seen that the motivation to learn English among VIII B class students using the storytelling method is most common in the interval class 85 - 90, as many as 2 students. Based on the results of Figure 4.3 in the above frequency distribution, it can be seen that the motivation to learn English among students of class VIII A with the highest frequency in the interval class 75 - 80 is as many as 2 students.

RESULT AND DISCUSSION

Storytelling Method

This method was applied in the experimental class, namely in class VIII B, with a total of 26 students. Student motivation category for class VIII B (experimental class). source: percentage of premier data from grade VIII B).

From the table above, it can be seen that the effect of treatment and no treatment is between 4.34 to 3.58%.

Prerequisite test

  • Normality test
  • Homogeneity test
  • Hypothesis testing
  • Contrast test

The overall results of the experimental class data had a rate of 75.50% and the control class had a rate of 60.00%. Based on the results of the Kolmogrov-Smirnov test using the SPSS 25 program above, the researcher can conclude that the Kolmogrov-Smirnov test results for the experimental class using the storytelling method with a significance level of (α) 0.05 is 0.200. Thus, the researcher concluded that providing methods affected students' motivation in learning English, especially speaking skills.

Based on the summary table of the further contrast test above, it can be concluded that, for contrast in this study, namely, H0 = is rejected because the significance value is 0.000 with α 0.05, which means that there is a significant difference between the story. the treated and untreated method is the photo narration method.

Discussion

Based on the results of data analysis on the motivation to learn English, especially speaking skills as an experimental class using the story method, which was treated in SMPN 03 Bengkulu in the high category, with intervals > 73.5 to 17 students with percentage. of 55%, and moderate with an interval of 6 students with a percentage of 34%. While in the high category with an interval of > 13.44 as many as 7 students with a presence of 18%. There is no significant influence between the picture narration method or no prior simulation on the learning motivation of grade VIII A students in English subjects at SMPN 03 Bengkulu in the middle of the academic year 2020/2021.
