in union with the professors of the English Language Department. We are starting on a small scale, but we hope to develop our activities as time passes. I hope that as many of you as possible will attend the first

ブリタニカ奨励基金を用いて、全国の中・高（最初は高校のみ）の 英語教員に対して、1週間泊まり込みのAll English 英語教員セミ ナーを開催した。
夏休みを利用し、秦野の上智大学セミナーハウス、旧日光かつら ぎ館、軽井沢セミナーハウス、そして、1995年にはアメリカ、デラ ぎ館、軽井沢セミナ ハウス、そして、1995年にはアメリカ、デラ ウェア大学でも開催した。また、1993年には、京都でも短縮バー ジョンを開催した。
ＡＳＴＥの会員、英語学科職員、そして、当時の大学院生がヘル パ として参加した

Bernard Choseed To Our Dear Friends and Colleagues in ASTE and the Sophia Seminar:

Bob and I remember with much delight and love the deeply moving experience we had on our first trip to Japan to
participate in the ASTE Workshop and the Sophia Seminar. We have always prided ourselves on our southern hospitality and yet, y p p y y , we found that Japanese hospitality is so very special because of the bonds that ties us together.
Our time together in Kyoto and also in Karuizawa was very

special. We remember the attentiveness of the teachers, their small recorders taking down each word, their sharing places to visit and sites to see, Robert’s first Rotary meeting overseas, and most of all the beautiful, beautiful questions that each person asked.
The reflections on the materials, how they planned to use the ideas in their own classrooms, their The reflections on the materials, how they planned to use the ideas in their own classrooms, their students and special situations…in many ways similar to what teachers in the U.S. were experiencing and yet different because of culture.
While we had worried about our ability to communicate, we found that there was none. There

were evenings in discussion and activities and of course, the “talent” show at the end. Dr. Bernie Choseed, Dr. Bill Acton, and Professor Yoshida made the event even more spectacular.
After we left Japan that year, we knew we would come back … and we did many times more, at least 11 before I retired. While all have left us with warm memories, our times at our seminar and least 11 before I retired.
