A STUDY ON TEACHING TECHNIQUES USED BY BIOLOGY TEACHER IN TEACHING BILINGUAL CLASS TO
SEVEN GRADERS IN SMP NEGERI 1 MALANG
ABSTRACT
Teaching technique is one of the important roles which should be executed and implemented by the teacher carefully. The teacher should know how to implement the techniques appropriately especially in a bilingual class. In a bilingual class, the students are demanded to use their foreign language as well as their native language. They should use both languages not only in English but also in other subjects; such as biology, mathematic, chemistry, etc.
This study investigated on the technique of teaching bilingual class to seven graders in SMPN 1 Malang, included: the techniques used by biology teacher in teaching bilingual class to seven graders at SLTP Negeri 1 Malang and the materials used by biology teacher in teaching bilingual class to seven graders at SLTP Negeri 1 Malang.
The design of this research was descriptive qualitative research design because it described the techniques of teaching biology in bilingual class at SLTP Negeri 1 Malang. The writer took the only one of biology teacher in teaching bilingual class at SLTP Negeri 1 Malang as her research subject. In collecting the data, the writer used two kinds of instruments: observation and interview. Observation was done for about three times. The interview was conducted to the teacher to get more data that could not be taken during the observation.
In this research the writer got some data. The teacher used three kinds of techniques. They were: lecturing, demonstration, and question-answer technique. Furthermore, in implementing the techniques, the teacher uses many kinds of material such as: videos and power points.
Key words: Techniques, Bilingual class and International Standardized School.

1 CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION
This chapter discusses the background of the study, statements of the problem, purposes of the study, significances of the study, scope and limitation, and definitions of key terms.
1.1Background of the Study
English is an International language. English becomes very important to learn because it is used in many aspects of life, such as technology and science. In technology, English can be applied to operate computer, access the internet system, and comprehend electrical devices. In science, English is employed as a medium of transferring scientific information. For example: in scientific books, journals and magazines. Therefore, we should study English language to develop our foreign language skill.
In Indonesia, a decree about International Standardized Schoolmentioned in the Education Act No. 20/ 2003 about National System of Education in article 50 verse 3 states that “Indonesian government and or state government administers at least one education unit at any grade to be improved as an education unit with the international standard”. Thus, the establishment of SBI (Sekolah Berstandar
Internasional) is one of the efforts to increase the quality of education. In this case,
2
Government within the borders of National Standard; and adapts International Curriculum (Hariyanto, 2009:1). Accordingly, the International Standardized School (ISS/ SBI in Indonesian) will guarantee that the quality of its educationis higher than National Standardized School (Sekolah Standar Nasional/SSN).
ISS are schools whichfulfill all of nationaleducation’s standard and are enriched by certain quality that comes from OECD (Organization of Economic Co-Operation and Development) countries such as England and America or other industrialized countries such as Japan or Canada (MONE Act No. 78 verse 1 item 8, 2009). Likewise, the Ministry of National Education (2005) states that an International Class has several characteristics which are different from regular class. ISS must have three basic principles, namely: Output (the graduates), Process (the teaching and learning process, method, style, and medium of instruction), and Input (intake/new students, instrumental: curriculum, teachers, principal, supporting agents, structures, organization, management, administration, and school environment) with international standard.
3
have the ability to master the teaching materials thoroughly (Act No 14 Year 2005). In line with this regulation, the teachers need to identify students’ needs, determine appropriate objectives for learning, design learning experiences, select instructional materials and media, and conduct assessment to measure student’s achievement.
In term of technique, Setiyadi(2006) stated that in teaching andlearning process, the teacher has to use technique which is defined as the procedures of teaching taken place in the classrooms. Teacher and technique cannot be separated each other that both of them affect the goal of teaching and learning in the class. In conclusion, the teacher must use appropriate technique to be implemented in International standardized class.
4
Nowadays, we have the newest class program in school that is called bilingual class. Because this is the newest class program, the technique must be different from regular class. Bilingual class is different from regular class because this class uses both English and Indonesia to communicate during the classroom activities. In bilingual class, both teacher and students should use their foreign language as well as their native language (In this case, they use English) for the instruction in teaching and learning process (Depdiknas, 2005). Therefore, the teacher should have the appropriate technique that can be applied in Bilingual class.
The writer chooses a bilingual class to be studied because bilingual class is the newest education program in Indonesia as being explained before that this class use both English and Indonesia to communicate in class. They use both languages not only in English lesson but also in other subjects; such as biology, mathematics, chemistry, or physics. So, the teacher should have the suitable technique that can be implemented in bilingual class.
The writer interested in conducting research about the technique of teaching biology in bilingual class because it has not been done yet by other researcher since bilingual class program is still new in Indonesia. In addition, Biology subject has richer English terms and vocabulary than other subjects such as: mathematic, physic and chemistry. Besides, there will be a difference between technique of teaching Biology in bilingual class and in a regular class.

favorite schools in Malang. In addition, the writer prefers the first grade of bilingual class that will be the model of the next grade of bilingual class.
1.2. Statements of the Problems
Based on the background above, the writer formulates the problem as follows: 1. What are the techniques used by Biology teacher in teaching bilingual
class at seven graders in SMP Negeri 1 Malang?
2. What are the materials used by biology teacher in teaching bilingual class to seven graders at SLTP Negeri 1 Malang?
1.3. Purposes of the Study
Based on the problems above, the purposes of this study:
1. To know the techniques used by Biology teacher in bilingual class at sevengraders in SMP Negeri 1 Malang.
2. To know the materials used by biology teacher in teaching bilingual class to seven graders at SLTP Negeri 1 Malang
1.4. Significances of the Study
6
Moreover, it also can give some information to the headmaster of the school about the technique that is applied by the teacher in bilingual class. The headmaster can evaluate whether the technique used has already reached the goals of the study and also the result of this research can give feedback to improve the quality of bilingual class programs in the school.
1.5. Scope and Limitation of the Study
This research is focused on techniques are applied by biology teacher during the teaching and learning activities. This research is limited to the teacher of Biology subject in bilingual class at SLTP Negeri 1 Malang.
1.6. Definitions of Key Terms
There are three key terms of this research, namely International Standardized School, Bilingual Class, Teaching Technique, and Instructional Material. To avoid misinterpretation, they are defined as follows:
1. Internationally Standardized School:
7
2. Bilingual class:
A class that provides students with ESL instruction as well as instruction in their native language. In this case, bilingual class uses two languages especially English and Indonesian language in the teaching and learning process (Depdiknas, 2005). In this study, bilingual class refers toone of the classes at SMP Negeri 1 Malang which uses both English and Indonesian as the language of instruction.
3. Teaching technique:
The specific activities manifested in the classroom, which are consistent with a method and therefore in harmony with approaches well (Brown, 2000). Teaching techniques in this study refers to the specific way that is chosen by biology teacher to deliver the subject in bilingual class at SMP Negeri 1 Malang.
4. Instructional Material:
