Alhamdulillahi Rabbil’alamin. Firstly and mainly the writer would like to

say thanks to Allah SWT who has given His mercy and blessing so that the writer

could finish the thesis as a partial fulfillment for the requirements of S.pd. Degree

at English Department, Teacher Training and Education faculty, Muhammadiyah

University of Purwokerto. Secondly, the writer would like to say thank to:

1. Drs. Joko Purwanto, M.Si., the Dean of Muhammadiyah University of

Purwokerto who gave permission to the writer to conduct the research.

2. Ending Kusrini, S.Pd, M.Hum The Head of English Department for giving

permission to the writer to conduct the research.

3. Dr. Furqanul Aziez, M.Pd., as the first consultant for giving and

permission to the writer to conduct the research also who had guided and

corrected the manuscript of the thesis.

4. Lutfi Istikharoh, M.Pd as the second consultant who had guided, given

suggestion to the writer patiently, and corrected the manuscript of the

accomplishing the research.

ABSTRACT

The aims of this research are (1) to know the first semester student’s competence in using gerund and present participle and (2) to find the kinds of errors that are made by the student of English Department of Muhammadiyah University of Purwokerto in Academic Year 2009/2010.

This research used descriptive test and it was carried out at the first semester students of English Department of Muhammadiyah University of Purwokerto in Academic Year 2009/2010 as population. The total population was 182 students that were consist of 4 classes (class A, class B, class C, and class D). The writer took random sampling technique and the sample was 20 % from the population for about 36 students. In this research, the writer used test to collect the data.
