ABSTRACT
The main cause of mortality and morbidity in patients with late stage HIV infection are opportunistic infections, which are severe infections caused by agents that rarely cause serious illness in immunocompetent individuals, therefore opportunistic infections can be caused by non-pathogenic organisms. The path towards the occurrence of opportunistic infections in HIV patients is determined by the immune regulatory mechanisms in the host. The types of opportunistic infections can differ in different countries.
This is a descriptive study aimed to find out the prevalence of opportunistic infections in HIV/AIDS patients. The study approach used is cross-sectional. The subject population is the secondary data of HIV/AIDS patients during the year 2010, obtained from the Voluntary Counseling Test (VCT) clinic of Haji Adam Malik Hospital.
The results of this study showed that out of the study population, 250 subjects (63,29%) had fungal opportunistic infection; 198 (79,20%) were male and 52(20,80%) were female. 86 subjects (21,77%) were those with bacterial opportunistic infections, with 72 (83,72%) being male and 14 (16,27%) were female. 52 (13,16%) had parasitic opportunistic infections, 43 (82,70%) of them were male, and 9 (17,30%) were female. The group with the lowest number is that of the virus parasitic infections, with a number of 7 subjects (1,77%), 3 of them (42,85%) being male and 4 (57,15%) female.
The results of this study will hopefully be useful for the researched, the public and specifically institutes related to the management of HIV/AIDS in Indonesia, be it a governmental institute or privately run establishment so that the spreading of opportunistic infections and HIV/AIDS can be reduced.
