INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Study

In daily activities language is main factor to communicate to other for

instance to request, claim, brain storming etc. Without language it is

impossible to do them.

There are many varieties of language in this world, and every part of it

has different language. Those languages are Mandarin, Indonesian, Tagalok,

Arabic, French, English and so on. It will be difficult for us to study and to be

capable those languages but, we have English as international language. It means English is union language among countries. There are many English language varieties which are used as a means of communication, including

British English, America etc. Language are a purely human and non instinctive method of communicating ideas, emotions, and desires by means of a system voluntarily produced symbols.1

Language has important role in our life aspect, such as : education,

economics, politics, cultures and art. There are many branches of art for example dance, photograph, poetry, drama and song. The songs have the imaginative quality and specific characteristic of the language use such as :

denotation, connotation, and symbols. Every word in the song has a power to person.1 2

(13)

Celine Dion is the one of the world diva singers. She has many popular

songs. Those song Indicated contain figurative language, and it can be difficult

to interpret for general readers (or hearers). The figurative languages used in

Celine Dion’s songs are simile, metaphor, personification, metonymy,

hyperbole, and apostrophe, for example:

Let the rain come down

And wash away my tears

Let it fill my s q uI

And drown my fears

Let it shatter the walls

For new son

A new day has come

It is easer to enjoy the song lyric than to understand their meanings,

more when the lyric uses figurative language, it needs to analyze strictly.

From the phenomena above, the writer is interested in conducting the study of

figurative of the language used in Celine Dion’s songs. Here the writer

chooses a research entitled: “A DESCRIPTIVE STUDY ON FIGURATIVE

LANGUAGE USED IN CELINE DION’S SONGS”.

B. Review of Related Literature

In this research, the writer uses several the other previous thesis as

(14)

3

The first review related to this research, and the title is “A Descriptive

study on Figurative Language used in Westlife’s Songs’’ which has been

researched by Ifonilla Yenianti in 2003, the student of State Islamic Studies

Institute (STAIN) Salatiga.

In her thesis, she has analyzed about the figurative language.

According to her, the figurative language used in Westlife’s song are

metonymy, hyperbole, personification, paradox metaphor, simile and

apostrophe, and it has many connotation meanings based on the data analysis.

The second review related to this research, and the title is “A

Descriptive study ort the use prepositions in Blue’s Songs'’ which has been

researched by Siti Aminah in 2004, the student of Islamic Studies Institute

(STAIN) Salatiga.

In her thesis, she has analyzed about preposition. According to her,

there are many preposition combinations (14%), and prepositions based on the

data analysis (38%).

The third review related to this research, and the title is “A Descriptive

Analysis o f the Language Used in Yusuf Islam ’s Songs" which has been

researched by Purwadi in 2002, the student of Islamic Studies Institute

(STAIN) Salatiga.

In his thesis, he has analyzed about the language. According to him,

the characteristic of the language used in Yusuf Islam’s songs are viewed from

i

diction, margery, concrete word, symbolism and versification.

(15)

The fourth review related to this research and the title is “A

Descriptive Study on the Uses o f Colloquial Style on English Songs” which

has been researched by Endriana Sriwahyuni in 2003, the student of State

Islamic Studies Institute (STAIN) Salatiga.

In her thesis, she has analyzed about the colloquial style. According to

her, the language style in English songs are colloquial style which discusses

about non standard English which is now recognized as normal and interesting

variety of English.

C. The Research Problem

In this thesis the writer would like to discuss the problem statements as

follows:

1. What are the types of figurative language used in Celine Dion’s

songs?

2. What is the denotative and connotative meaning in Celine Dion’s

songs ?

3. What are the messages conveyed in Celine Dion’s song’s lyrics ?

D. The Objectives of the Study

The following are some point that the writer like to discuss :

1. To identify the types of figurative language used in Celine Dion’s songs.

2. To identify the denotative and connotative meaning in Celine Dion’s

songs.

(16)

J >

E. The Limitation of the study

The writer would like to limit this research, the limitations are :

1. This research will be limited by writer on analyzing the figurative of

language used by Celine Dion’s songs.

2. This research will be limited on the “A New Day has Come” albums by

Celine Dion, and “Aun Existe Amor” will not be discussed because it uses

French

F. The Benefit of the Study

The writer hopes this thesis has benefits as :

1. Practically, the study will give additional contribution to the English

students and English lectures, to increase our knowledge in understanding

the figurative language.

2. Theoretically, this study will add the literature in linguistic about

figurative language.

G. The Methodology of the Research

1. The Method Research

The writer uses descriptive method in this thesis. The reason of

choosing this riiethod is according to Suharsini Arikunto’s opinion stating

that Descriptive studies are designed to obtain information concerning

with the current status of phenomena.3 There is no administration or

control of treatment as a forward in experimental study. Therefore this study 5

(17)

attempts to identify, classify, and describe figurative language of Celine

Dion s songs.

2. Method of Collecting Data

In this research, the writer uses documentation data collection, that

are found out the data’s about variable like draft, transcript, book,

newspaper, magazine, notulen, legger etc.4 Document, in this case is the

• • ' . .* /

. text of Celine Dion’s songs cassete.

The techniques of taking the data were as follows;

a. The writer sellected the celine Dion’s English songs

b. The writer sellected the songs from New Day Has Come album

c. The writer read all of the lyrics of New Day Has Come album

d. The writer sellected the figurative language belonging to Celine Dion’s

song

3. Method of Analyzing Data

In this step, the writer uses descriptive method which does not need

hypothesis formulation or the other opinion as Anton says that

“Descriptive method means the thinking of every ideology and philosophy

is described clearly and completely. So, the similarity and differences can

tread clearly too. Using this description, it will be known about the

description of language, thought and human behavior” A * 3

3 Anton Bekker and M. Char’s Zubair. 1999. Metodology Penelitian Filsafat.

(18)

7

The techniques of analyzing the data are as follows:

a. Listening to the Celine dion’s songs

b. Reading and learning all sentences from the text’s song

c. Identifying the kinds of figurative languages

d. Analyzing denotative and connotative meaning from those songs

e. Describing the message conveyed of every lyric

H. Outline of the Final Paper

It is necessary to divide a thesis into several parts. The writer decides

to divide the thesis into five chapters as follow:

Chapter I is introduction. It consists of general back ground of the

study, review or related literature, research problem, objectives of the study,

limitation of the study, benefit of the study, and methodology of the research

and organization of the study.

’ j - , v .

Chapter II is underlying theory. It consists of the notion of figurative

language and the biography of Celine Dion’s song.

Chapter III is data presentation..

Chapter IV is analysis and discussion. It consists of analysis of

figurative language used in Celine Dion’s songs, data analysis of denotative

meaning and connotative meaning in Celine Dion’s song, and the messages

conveyed.

Chapter V is closure. It consists of conclusion and suggestions

The last part is bibliography and appendix.

(19)

In this chapter, the writer talks about the notion of figurative language of

songs:

A. The Notion of Figurative Language

Figurative language is one which literally in compatible term, forces

the readers to attend the connotation rather than to the denotation and good

figurative language representing something that will be exposed.1 In the same

manner Edward affirms “the figurative uses of language occurs very

frequently, although not inevitably, in lyric poetry.1 2 Many poet makes their

i

poetry become songs lyric. From the quotations above, figurative language is

the way to express feeling through the implicitly meaning or messages and

needs to identify strictly.

According to Kennedy the figurative language has some elements.

They are metaphor, simile, personification, paradox, hyperbole, apostrophe,

and metonymy.3

1. Metaphor

Gorys affirms that a metaphor is a variety of analogy which

compare two things directly but, in short pattern. 4 5 It does not use the

connective word such as like, as if, seem, fittingly, etc.

For example :

a. When Hamlets speaks of “a sea of troubles”, he compares the sea with

the collection of difficulties and problems he is facing.3

b. I am a big, big world

The first main word is connected with the second main word directly.

Thus, “1 am” connected with “big world” directly.

2. Simile

Simile is a comparison which has explicit characteristic, it means

that they state something similar with each other thing directly. 6 It is

indicated by some conpective words such as : as, than, like, etc.

For example :

a. Her eyes is likes a star, east stars

b. I love you as like I love my rag dolls

The word “eyes” and “east star”, expression can be called explicit

comparison because it express those words with the same purpose.

Page. 139 , *

5 James L. Potter. 1967. Elements o f Literature. New York: The Odyssey Pres Inc. page 54

(21)

3. Personification

Personification or prosopopoeia is figure of speech in imaginative

something, which does not have soul, as though they have human

characteristic.7 8

For example:

a. I hope my dreams will take me there

b. Love can give and take away

Personification of special variety of metaphor, which is figuring

Q

somethings do and speak as like human.

4. Paradox

Paradox is variety of language style which has a real contrasted

with a fact. It can be meant all of things that interest because of their

truth.9

a. He was hungry death in the middle of his wealth

b. An enemy sometime is close friend

In this case, a wealth person is impossible to hunger death but, it

can be happen. Enemy can be any where includes in our surrounding

5. Hyperbole

Hyperbole or overstatement is the language style containing

exaggeration element about something.10

7 Ibid, page 140 8 Ibid

(22)

l o r e x a m p le a She is all <//v.v.v«v/ up

h. You are my tomorrow

The denotation meaning of the word “dressed up” is “put on one’s

best clothes” and the denotation meaning of “tomorrow” is “it will be

married”

6. Apostrophe

Apostrophe is a way of addressing someone or something invisible

or not ordinary spoken, apostrophe may address an inanimate object, some

i

, i i

dead, absent person, an abstract thing or spirit.11

For example:

‘Hi, idols in the paradise, came and free us from this curse’

7. Metonymy

Metonymy word, that comes from Greek, meta means describes a

changing. And anoma, means name. Thus metonymy is the language style

uses a word to describe another thing closely associated with it. Their

relation are discoverered for discovering result, cause-effect or effect-

cause, content to describe their cover and so on.11 12 13 Thus metonymy is

synecdoche form. Synecdoche is the use of a part thing to stand for the

whole of it or vice versa.15

(23)

For example:

a. Tell me what makes a man

b. Somebody wants your love so open the door

The denotative meaning of word “a man” is “is the ideal man”, and the

denotative meaning of word “open the door” is “give a chance”.

Human can rise their feeling up, what they want, even more to

criticize through songs. A song is generally performed with the music

instrument accompaniment. But, there are many song performs which do

not use music instrument accompaniment for example, acapela, a

community of person who sing a song uses oral music accompaniment. If

they want guitar melody their mouth have a voice like a guitar melody,

and so on. Music development is signed by so many new comer artists and

music awards.

Using figurative language has target to make beautify, refine even

more clarify something which has been purposed by the writer. In using

language style, it will be influenced by the writer’s culture, a level of

literacy, sexual, and emotion. Ifonilla affirms ’’Figurative language is

language with its literally in compatible term, forces the readers to attend

the connotation rather than to the denotation, and good figurative language

V.- / ■

is words used on in literal sense but of context the writers taste and

„ 14

purpose. ... . .

DATA PRESENTATION

A. Data Presentation

In this chapter, the writer presents the data collections that will be

discussed. Data is plural word of datum. It is some fact, proposition, quantity

or condition granted or known especially when it is to be used for further

research and reasoning.!

The writer applies documentation as the way of the data collections.

He takes the song’s text from Celine Dion’s cassette song as follows :

I am Alive

1 get wing to fly, oh... I’m alive

When you call on me, when I heard you breathe 1 get wings to fly, I feel that I’m alive

c>.

When you look at me, I can touch the sky I know that I’m alive Mmmm... Ohhh... Ahhh

Doubt

It can close you in Build the walls within I let fear control me I let go

Didn't know

Where the answer would be

Right in front of you Right in front of me We were looking

But somehow, some way We couldn't see

That the love was always there It's been around us everywhere I had to fall to finally see

That you were right in front of me

Faith

It can lift you up And we've got enough To reach a new beginning

Love

Can withstand a storm In the final hour

We'll find the joy in living Don't let go

Have you ever been in love You could touch the moonlight When your heart's shooting stars You're holding heaven in your arms Have you ever been so in love

Have you ever walked on air Ever felt like you were dreamin' When you never thought it could But it really feels that good Have you ever been so in love

Have you ever been in love You could touch the moonlight When your heart's shooting star You're holding heaven in your arms Have you ever been in love, have you...

The time I spent

Waiting for something that was heaven-sent When you find it don't let go,

I know

Have you ever said a prayer And found that it was answered All my hope has been restored And I ain't looking anymore

Have you ever been so in love, have you...

Some place that you ain’t leavin’ Somewhere you're gonna stay When you finally found the meanin' Have you ever felt this way

The time I spent

Waiting for something that was heaven-sent When you find it, don't let go,

I know...

Coz have you ever been so in love, so in love You could touch the moonlight

Chorus Like rain, tax

After lightening the thunder cracks Sooner or later it had to come true Like rain, tax

Weeds grow up through the pavement cracks You see what I want

What I want is you

Through that life was logical Love was a miracle

That happened to someone else, not me Baby I musta said a little prayer

Suddenly I looked up, you were there And the rest is history

I don't want to be an island anymore Just resign yourself

'Cause there's one thing for sure

Chorus

It had to be you,it had to be you Say you'll be here forever You and me here together When will you see what I want What I what is you

And the world thought I had it all But I was waiting for you

Hush, love

I see a light in the sky Oh, it's almost blinding me I can't believe

I've been touched by an angel with love

Let the rain come down and wash away my tears Let it fill my soul and drown my fears

Let it shatter the walls for a new, new sun

A new day has... come

Where it was dark now there's light Where there was pain now there's joy

Where there was weakness, I found my strength All in the eyes of a boy

Hush, love

I see a light in the sky Oh, it's almost blinding me I can't believe

I've been touched by an angel with love

Let the rain come down and wash away my tears Let it fill my soul and drown my fears

Let it shatter the walls for a new, new sun

A new day has... come

(33)

Let it fill my soul and drown my fears Let it shatter the walls for a new, new sun

A new day has... come

(34)

Ten Days

At the doorway of my heart All the leaves have fallen down And though I try to pick them up, There's so many I think i'll drown

CHORUS***

Ten days have come and gone Ten days and I'm all alone And all that I can do is Pray and pray

Ten days I've seen the rain Cornin' down on a sunny day But all I've got to do is Pray and pray

And pray

At the doorway of my life I feel the pain, but feel no shame And what I've got, I keep inside

Some things have changed but I'm still the same

***CHORUS***

And if you're goin' my way Don't think that I'll bend 'Cause this is where I’ll stay I think it's the end

***CHORUS***

Goodbye's (The Saddest Word)

Mamma

You gave life to me Turned a baby into a lady

And mamma All you had to offer

Was the promise of a lifetime of love

Now I know There is no other

Love like a mother's love for her child

And I know

A love so complete Someday must leave Must say goodbye

Goodbye's the saddest word I'll ever hear Goodbye's the last time I will hold you near Someday you'll say that word and I will cry It'll break my heart to hear you say goodbye

Mamma

You gave love to me

Turned a young one into a woman

And mamma All I ever needed

Was a guarantee of you loving me

'Cause I know There is no other

Love like a mother's love for her child

And it hurts so

That something so strong

Someday'll be gone, must say goodbye

(36)

But the love you give will always live You'll always be there every time I fall You are to me the greatest love of all

You take my weakness and you make me strong And I will always love you 'till forever comes

And when you need me I'll be there for you all the way I'll be there your whole life through I'll be there this I promise you, mamma

I'll be your beacon through the darkest nights I'll be the wings that guide your broken flight I'll be your shelter through the raging storm And I will love you 'till forever comes

Goodbye's the saddest word I'll ever hear Goodbye's the last time I will hold you near Someday you'll say that word and I will cry It'll break my heart to hear you say goodbye

'Till we meet again... Until then...

(37)

Can we touch the soul of heaven? Can we unite a sacred lesson?

Every child creates a skylight...of beauty Can you hear cathedrals failin’

All the universe is callin’

Cry a single cello...from your heart

Since the world has lost her way Loneliness journey endlessly Yet the promised chance remains Gift of what could be

So let the children remember the sun Let them dance, let them soar

For their lives have begun

Let the children engender the rain As the river runs through fields Forever subsiding their pain Prayer...

Every voice along the shoreline Standing still within time

Spinnin’ unresolved...the walkin’ As each season passes

Through wonderland, through lookin’ glasses The secret garden shines...beckons you Gentle flower don’t fade away

Sweet innocence still harbors thee In the faith of golden dreams Where one love lives eternally

Let the children remember the sun Let them dance, let them soar For their lives have begun

Let the children engender the rain As the river runs through fields Forever subsiding their pain Prayer...

Prayer...

Ohhhhh...

(38)

They are the truth o f spirit in flight Yes the children engender the rain As the river runs through life Healing their pain

You can trust with your heart one more time Sweet angel conceived

You have forever and always believed...

Prayer...prayer...

Prayer...

(39)

There's so much life I've left to live And this fire's burning still

When I watch you look at me I think I could find the will To stand for every dream And forsake the solid ground And give up this fear within

O f what would happen if they ever knew I'm in love with you

'Cause I'd surrender everything To feel the chance to live again I reach to you

I know you can feel it too We'd make it through

A thousand dreams I still believe I'd make you give them all to me

I'd hold you in my arms and never let go I surrender

I know I can't survive

Another night away from you You're the reason I go on And now I need to live the truth Right now, there's no better time From this fear I will break free And I live again with love

And no the they can't take that away from me And they will see... yeah

I’d surrender everything

To feel the chance to live again I reach to you

I know you can feel it too We'd make it through

A thousand dreams I still believe I'd make you give them all to me

I'd hold you in my arms and never let go I surrender

Every night's getting longer

(40)

I'll swallow my pride and I'll be alive CAN'T you hear my call

I surrender

(I'd surrender everything To feel the chance to live again) I reach to you

I know you can feel it too We'll make it through

A thousand dreams I still believe I'll make you give them all to me

I'll hold you in my arms and never let go I surrender

Right here, right now I give my life to live again I'll break free, take me

My everything I surrender all to you right now

I give my life to live again I'll break free, take me

(My everything) My everything (I surrender all to you)

(41)

No super love

Trying to get what ya need It's a good situation

Sorry for elaboratin'

But I want more and more and more

So just keep knockin' knockin' knockin' on my door But baby you're a hard thing to find

Because

You and me we got a super love Never gonna give give it up

It's the kind of sweet dreams are made of I'm not afraid o f - our super love

(43)

No super love

You and me we got a super love

Gimme gimme gimme some of that super love It's the kind of sweet dreams are made of I'm not afraid of

Our super love

You and me we got a super love Ain't no way we'll ever get enough It's the kind of sweet dreams are made of I'm not afraid of

Sorry F o r Love

Forgive me for the things That I never said to you Forgive me for not knowing The right words to say, to prove

That I will always be Devoted to you and me

And if you can’t feel that in my love Then I'm sorry for not giving you enough

But I'm not sorry for my love I'm not sorry for my touch The way I made your hands Tremble and my heart rush

I would do it all again

Wouldn't take back a thing, no 'Cause with you I've lived A thousand lives in one

And I could never be I could never be Sorry for love

Well, maybe there've been times That I let you down

Looking back on all those moments I know that I should have found

The best o f me for you And now I will promise to

And if you don't see that in my eyes Then I’ll be

Sorry for the rest of my life

But I'm not sorry for my love I'm not sorry for my touch The way I made your hands Tremble and my heart rush I

I would do it all again

(45)

A thousand lives in one

But I could never be I could never be Sorry for love

And we all make mistakes No matter how hard we try But hearts can only break When sorry comes all around

OOh, when sorry comes around

I'm not sorry... For my love For my touch

I would do it all again I wouldn't take back a thing

Because with you I've lived A thousand lives into one But I could never be I could never be I could never be I could never be

The Greatest Reward Lyrics

So suddenly, so strange

Life wakes you up, things change I've done my best, I've served my call I thought I had it all

So suddenly, so strong My prejudice was gone

You needed me, I found my place I'm different now, these days

Now the greatest reward Is the light in your eyes The sound of your voice And the touch of your hand You made me who I am

You trusted me to grow I gave my heart to show

There's nothing else I cherish more I stand by you for sure

Now the greatest reward Is the love that I can give I'm here for you now For as long as I live You made me who I am

So suddenly, it's clear to me Things change

Our future lies in here and now We made it through somehow

Now the greatest reward Is the love that I can give I'm here for you now For as long as I live You made me who I am

(47)

How they feel, or what they say You're everything, I never knew I always wanted, baby

I've been warned, so many times They tell me I've Ignored the signs

But nobody knows you like I do The only one for me is you

I can't stop, can't fight, can't resist it When the wrong one loves you right (Oh-oh-oh-oh-yeah)

Can't run - can't hide - can't say no When the wrong one loves you right (Oh-oh-oh oh)

When the wrong one loves you right

Getting tired, of hearing that

You're dangerous, but they wont stop Until I leave, they won't believe

That being with you won't break my heart So worried 'bout, the road ahead

They can't see that, you're my best friend

They're never gonna take me away from you There's nothing they can do

I can't stop, can't fight, can't resist it When the wrong one loves you right (Oh-oh-oh-oh-yeah)

Can't run - can't hide - can't say no When the wrong one loves you right (Oh-oh-oh oh)

When the wrong one loves you right

How can I walk away When the feeling's so strong I know you're where I belong They say I let my heart Make up my mind

(48)

(Oh-oh-oh-oh-yeah)

Can't run - can't hide - can't say no When the wrong one loves you right (Oh-oh-oh oh)

When the wrong one loves you right

I can't stop, can't fight, can't resist it When the wrong one loves you right (Oh-oh-oh-oh-yeah)

Can't run - can't hide - can't say no When the wrong one loves you right (Oh-oh-oh oh)
