Grades and Grade Reports

Basis of Grades

An instructor may require the student to provide the dean's recommendation that the circumstances warrant an incomplete grade. If the student has not completed the required work by the end of the following year, the registrar will automatically change the I to an F.

Pass/Fail Option

The grade Incomplete can only be awarded when a student has completed at least three quarters of the work in a course and unusual circumstances prevent the student from completing the work within the previously established deadlines. During the last quarter of the semester, students will only be allowed to withdraw from classes under extenuating circumstances.

Good Standing

A full-time student is automatically on academic probation when the cumulative semester index or semester index is less than 2.0 (C). A part-time student is automatically on academic probation when the cumulative semester index or grade point average for the last 12 credits of consecutive enrollment is less than 2.0 (C).

Scholarships and Awards

Part-time students may be dismissed if their cumulative semester index or grade point average for the last 18 credits of consecutive enrollment is less than 2.0 (C). Under this policy, only the grade of F can be replaced by the next passing grade in the cumulative semester index.

Minority Engineering Advancement Program

Departments require students to successfully complete at least three co-op work sessions to receive academic credit. The student must have satisfactorily completed the first two semesters of the academic education and must meet the minimum grade point average requirements set by the academic department.

Summer Internships in the Federal Republic of Germany

Students who successfully complete four or more sessions of work are eligible to receive a Purdue University Cooperative Education Certificate upon completion of their bachelor's degree.

Admission Requirements

If credit by examination is used to fulfill part of the general education requirements for a course, an additional 3 credit hours must be satisfactorily completed in the same department (except in the case of foreign languages, where the additional course must be in the same language). ). Substitution of courses required for graduation can be made by the Dean of the School.

Department of Electrical Engineering

The operational principles of discrete devices (eg a transistor) and the design of discrete electronic circuits are studied together with the design of thin film integrated circuits such as logic gates, operational amplifiers and memory and microprocessor chips. Applications include medical imaging, system design, medical signal analysis, medical image processing and display, satellite communications data transmission and processing, earth resource monitoring and analysis, geophysical exploration, digital audio and video information processing, and design of artificially intelligent machines.

Department of Mechanical Engineering

Students collaborate with their faculty advisors in developing a personal plan of study leading to the Bachelor of Science in Engineering (B.S.E.) degree with interdisciplinary engineering identified as the major area of study. The School of Engineering and Technology and the Indiana University School of Business offer a joint program in engineering management.

Graduate Engineering Programs

Admission Policies and Procedures

Students living in the United States must apply at least four months before the start of the semester in which they wish to enroll. Applicants will be formally notified of the final decision on their admission by the dean of the Graduate School Purdue University, West Lafayette.

Undergraduate and Transfer Credit

Enrollees in this classification may apply for admission to graduate studies as full-time graduate students; however, a maximum of 12 credit hours earned under a provisional graduate student classification may be applied to a graduate program if the individual is subsequently admitted as a full-time graduate student. Students who have already earned 12 credit hours under provisional classification will not be able to count credits earned in the semester in which they are awaiting admission as a full-time graduate student toward their programs of study unless admission is approved before the end of that semester.

General Degree Requirements

In addition, credits earned in courses taken while admission is pending may be applied toward the advanced degree only if those courses are appropriate to the degree program and acceptable to both the School of Engineering and Technology and the Graduate School. No course for which a grade lower than B is received will be accepted as part of a study plan if the course was taken while enrolled as a temporary graduate student. The study plan must be approved by the advisory committee and the Graduate School.

Master of Science in Electrical Engineering

Students can choose one of the primary areas and choose related area courses from the other primary area courses or related area courses or both.

Technology Programs

Admission to technology programs requires a combined SAT total of 750 or higher or a combined ACT total of 16 or higher. Applicants who have graduated from high school two or more years prior to applying for admission may qualify without completing the ACT or SAT.

Associate in Applied Science

All applicants who have not completed a full year of college work are required to take the College Entrance Examination Board (CEEB) Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or the American College Test (ACT). When it becomes necessary to limit the number of Indiana residents admitted to a specific program, students will be offered admission to an alternate program or admission to the desired program for a subsequent semester.
