Determination of Rosmarinic Acid in Some Iranian Salvia Species by HPLC method

Rosmarinic acid (RA) is a biologically active phenolic compound, which commonly found in species of the Boraginaceae and Lamiaceae families. To the best of our knowledge, among 58 Iranian native Salvia species, only S.limbata has been studied for the prescence of rosmarinic. The objective of this paper was determination of rosmarinic acid content in the different organs of four Salvia species of Iran by HPLC method. Hydroalcoholic extracts of the dried and powdered samples were prepared for analysis of RA. Based on our results, among the studied organs, leaves were the richest sources of RA. The highest amounts of RA were determined in leaves of S. officinalis followed by S. sclarea (24.13 ± 0.99 and 11.49 ± 0.89 mg/g dry weight). Among the stem organs, the highest contents of RA were found in stems of S. officinalis and S. reuterana (10.71 ± 0.24 and 6.24 ± 0.07 mg/g dry weight). Root samples of S. officinalis and S. sclarea with 6.51 ± 0.46 and 4.04 ± 0.37 mg/g dry weight, respectively had the highest contents of RA. In conclusion, based our results, some Iranian Salvia species could be introduced as potent sources of RA.
