Teacher of BIPA (Bahasa Indonesia untuk Penutur Asing) in Teaching Speaking of

Bahasa Indonesia for Darmasiswa Student at University of Muhammadiyah Malang”.

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

This section presents the background of the study, statement of the problem, purpose of the

study, significance of the study, scope and limitation, and definition of key term.

1.1Background of the Study

For years language teachers have been trying to come up with new ways to transfer

knowledge to their students. Teachingis guiding and facilitating, learning, enabling the learner to

learn, setting the condition for learning (Brown, 2000:7). It refers to teachers activity to guide,

facilitate, giving the learner opportunity to learn and make the learning situation as comfortable

as can in order to the aim of learning is achieved. In teaching a language, the teacher need

techniques as tools in presenting the material. Besides, it can make a language teacher’s job

much easier, and language learning much more fun for students, it can helps the teacher be able

to make language learning become pleasurable activity. So, the student can learn with eagerness,

enthusiastic and fun.

Thus, techniques are really important and needed in teaching activity. Furthermore, according

to Brown (2000:171) technique is any of wide variety of exercises, activities, or devices used in

the language classroom for realizing lesson objectives. It means that technique is a tool used by

the teacher to facilitate the students to get the target language.

Moreover, teaching speaking needs several techniques, although not all techniques are

effective to arouse the student’s interest. The uses of techniques need to be carefully planned by

the teacher. The teacher should use the technique at the right time for the right purpose in order

usually used by the teacher in teaching foreign language, for example demonstration,

explanation, discovery, accurate reproduction, and immediate creativity and check questions

(Harmer, 2001: 154-156).

Practically,teaching foreign language is not easy as we think. Sometimes teachers face some

problems in teaching foreign language and applying the techniques to the students. For example,

the facility or teaching media, students’ motivation is low, and language instruction sometimes

not clear enough. It is supported by Harmer (2001: 251) who states some problems that are faced

by the teacher. First, students language level. It means that every students has different ability in

accepting the material, so individual students learn at different speeds and it different ways.

Second, there is a purpose to the task or it has some outcome. It refers to students who know

about the purpose of learning, so students will be aware how important the learning process is.

Third, students’ interest to the topic. It is difficult for the teacher when he or she uses technique

in teaching foreign language, but students are not interested enough in the topic that is presented

by the teacher.

Many people from different countries learn foreign language as their second language in order

to communicate with others in larger society. Nevertheless, every country has their own

language which differs to others, no exception Indonesia. Moreover, in the globalization era

many foreigners come to Indonesia for certain purposes such as education, business, politics,

pleasure, etc. Therefore, mastering Bahasa Indonesia is badly needed by the foreigner to

communicate with local people.

Nowadays, Bahasa Indonesia is not only as official language of Indonesia but also it is

learned and used in many countries around the world. There are at least 73 countries that have

Most are in Japan, Australia, Germany, and America. For example, Australia that geographically

near with Indonesia, they put Bahasa Indonesia as the extracurricular in their schools. So, it can

be said that the development of Bahasa Indonesia is quite good if since there are some

institutions or education centers which teach Bahasa Indonesia to foreigners.

Indonesian Language for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) is a program to study Indonesian

language, arts, and cultures for foreign students (http://bipa.umm.ac.id/home.php?lang=en).

BIPA is scattered in several universities in Indonesia. One of them is University of

Muhammadiyah Malang. The BIPA participants are people from foreign countries who are

interested in studying the Indonesian language and culture through Darmasiswa Program.

Darmasiswa is a scholarship program offered to all foreign students from countries which have

diplomatic relationship with Indonesia to study Bahasa Indonesia, arts, music and crafts.

Participants can choose one of 45 different universities located in different cities in Indonesia.

University of Muhammadiyah Malang is trusted by National Education Department (Diknas) as

the host partner for Darmasiswa program since 2006 until now. There have been 39 participants

joined Darmasiswa Program and studied in University of Muhammadiyah Malang organized by

BIPA since 2006 to 2010.

For some foreign students, learning Bahasa Indonesia as a foreign language is not easy. It

happens because it is difficult to memorize a lot of unfamiliar vocabulary with different spelling

and pronunciation. The theoretical explanation above is supported by research done by Rasyidi

(2011) and Arif (2005).

Rasyidi (2011) conducted a research about difficulties faced by American Peace Corps

volunteers in learning components of Bahasa Indonesia, for example phonology (sounds),

his study stated that they were difficult to memorize words added by affixes that change the

words’ meaning. They also felt that there are a lot of synonyms in Bahasa Indonesia making

them difficult and confuse to choose the appropriate word to use in daily speaking.

Another research done by Arif (2005) was discussing about teaching speaking technique in

Basic English Course in Pare. The instruments used were observation and interview. Based on

the research, it was found that there were four different techniques used by the teacher in

teaching learning process in the classroom namely games, role-plays, small group discussion,

and drilling.

Based on the facts and findings above, the researcher is interested in conducting a research

related to the technique applied by the teacher of BIPA in teaching speaking of Bahasa Indonesia

for Darmasiswa students at University of Muhammadiyah Malang.

1.2Statement of the Problems

Based on the background of the study above, the researcher formulates the statement of the

problems as follows:

1. What are the techniques applied by the teacher in teaching Bahasa Indonesia for

Darmasiswa student at University of Muhammadiyah Malang?

2. What are the problems faced by the teacher in applying those techniques?

3. How does the teacher solve those problems?

1.3Purpose of the Study

1. To describe the technique applied by the teacher in teaching Bahasa Indonesia for

Darmasiswa student at University of Muhammadiyah Malang.

3. To see how the teacher solve those problems.

1.4Significance of the Study

The result of this study will be useful for the teachers especially for the teacher of BIPA. It

can help them to improve their skill in teaching speaking and apply the appropriate techniques in

teaching Bahasa Indonesia to foreigners. In addition, this research will be useful for University

of Muhammadiyah Malang to create the good teachers in teaching Bahasa Indonesia to the

foreigners. Furthermore, for the next researcher it can be used as reference for conducting further

research.

1.5Scope and Limitation

This study is focused on techniques applied by the teacher of BIPA in teaching Bahasa

Indonesia at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. This study is limited only on speaking class.

1.6Definition of Key Terms

To get a definite understanding of the concepts of the study, the following definitions are

given, they are:

1. Teaching is guiding and facilitating, learning, enabling, the learner to learn, setting the

condition for learning (Brown, 2000:7).

2. Technique is any of wide variety of exercises, activities, or devices used in the language

classroom for realizing lesson objectives (Brown, 2000: 171).

3. BIPA (Indonesian Language for Foreign Speakers) is a program to study Indonesian
