ANALYSIS OF JAKARTA GLOBE’S DEIXIS AND DEFINITIENESS IN NEWSPAPER

Abstract

Deixis is a human language peculiarity wherein specific articulation referential relies upon setting use. By knowing deixis, a speaker realizes substitute reference words relying upon the questioner, places and time discussion happens. Deixis can be tracked down in the spoken and composed media. The utilization of proffer deixis ideas in the Paper media is affected by foundation in its subject. This study expects to recognize the deixis utilized in web-based Paper; Jakarta Post. This study was directed by utilizing the illustrative subjective strategy. The result of this study found that there are five types of deixis and definiteness. It is consisted of one type deixis its about diexis of time (temporal) then three types of definiteness there are proper name, Phrase introduced by a definite determiner the, Phrase introduced by a definite determiner that and personal pronoun.

INTRODUCTION

Communication can be seen well by both the speaker and listener (Aminatun et al., 2021), when they are familiar the unique circumstance and the subject of discussion (Kardiansyah, 2019). Some of the time we are don't know about the message we get from something we read or hear (K. Sari & Pranoto, 2021), and we worry about making ourselves clear to other people (Al Falaq & Puspita, 2021). In correspondence, there are likewise a few parts of language that should be taken note (Isnaini & Aminatun, 2021). For instance, when we do communication, we will track down the utilization of 3 references or term of address (Puspita, 2019), for example, He, She, You, Sir, old buddy, here, there, and so on (Puspita, n.d.). The intention is to point something (Febrian & Fadly, 2021). These words can be called as Deixis. Acoording to (Pranoto & Afrilita, 2019) Deixis is the words which the referents generally change contingent upon the specific circumstance. METHOD

The researcher uses qualitative research as the methodology of this research. This kind of research belongs to qualitative research which is characterized by observation and description in forms of words or sentences. Qualitative research is accomplished by giving explanation of the issue in the analysis. The data of this research were obtained from news article entitled “Indonesian Students in Taiwan Say Reports of 'Forced Labor' Are False”

which is that published January 03 2019. The analysis started with the types of relative clauses found in the novel. The researcher will use the contrastive analysis study to contrast between Indonesian and English language.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

"Taiwan always looks highly to Indonesian diaspora's welfare and rights in Taiwan; no matter they are students (Setri & Setiawan, 2020), migrant workers or spouse (Qodriani &

Kardiansyah, 2018). So the related ministries or agencies won't let the problem happen if any (Qodriani & Wijana, 2020). Kendra Chen, a Jakarta-based representative of the Taipei Economic and Trade Office, told the Globe via WhatsApp (F. M. Sari & Oktaviani, 2021).

Nineteen-year-old Muhammad Iqbal, one of the Indonesian students enrolled at Hsing Wu University under the college and internship program (Suprayogi, 2019), had nothing but praise for the scheme (Amelia & Daud, 2020). As (Rido et al., 2020) told that the Jakarta Globe via WhatsApp that the Indonesian Economic and Trade Office held a discussion with students on Thursday to verify the claims currently circulating in the media. As (Oktaviani et al., 2022) added that the program offered many benefits. "The program gives us an internship experience in an international setting (Nurmala Sari & Aminatun, 2021), networking opportunities, and financial independence (Pranoto & Suprayogi, 2020).

Deixis

Deixis is one which takes some elements of its meaning from the situation (the speaker, the addressee, the time and place) of the utterance of it in which it is used (Sartika & Pranoto, 2021). In this research, the result of analysis discussed as follow:

Time deixis (Temporal)

This kind of deixis is usually introduced by the phrase of time.

“The reports, which surfaced in the Taiwanese media last week, quoted Ko Chih-en, a lawmaker for the Nationalist Party, or Kuomintang, who claimed that hundreds of Indonesian students enrolled in a college and internship program are being subjected to forced labor in local factories.” (line 3).

- In this case, the part that can be classified as time deixis is the phrase “last week”

means that from the case the reports was surfaced in the Taiwanese media one week ago where it was happen.

“Arrmanatha Nasir, spokesman for the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said in a statement on Wednesday evening that the government was seeking an explanation from the Taiwanese authorities and that it had also called for a full investigation.” (line 9)

- In this case, the deictic adverb of time that classified as time deixis is “Wednesday evening”. It means that, when the speaker deliver the utterance in which Armanatha Nasir as a spokesman for Indonesia ministry of foreign affairs had described that the government was seeking an explanation from the Taiwanese authorities and called for investigation.

“However, more than 200 Indonesian students currently enrolled in the college and internship program at Hsing Wu University have signed a petition on Wednesday denying the allegations. “ (line 20)

- In this part, the deictic adverb of time that appeared is the word “Wednesday”. In this case, the deictic adverb of time “Wednesday” where the condition was happened when more than 200 Indonesian students that enrolled in the college and internship program at Hsing Wu University signed a petition.

“The Taipei Economic and Trade Office in Jakarta reaffirmed on Thursday a commitment by its government to protect Indonesian students in the country.” (line 39)

- In this session, the deictic adverb of time that appeared is the word “Thursday”

A. Definiteness

Definiteness is a feature of noun phrase selected by the speaker to convey his assumption that the hearer will be able to identify the referent of the noun phrase (Gulö &

Rahmawelly, 2019). From the result of analysis there are four types of definiteness, it can be seen as follow:

 Proper name

- In this case, the noun phrase in line 3 “Ko Chih-en” is identified as a lawmaker for the Nationalist Party. He is who claimed that hundreds of Indonesia students enrolled in a college and internship program.

Where in his utterance he said that Taiwan always looks highy to indoensian diasppora‟s welfare and rights in Taiwan.

 Phrase introduced by a definite determiner “ the “

Several Indonesians currently studying in Taiwan have denied forced labor claims made in recent media reports that have strained relations between the two countries. (line 2)

- The definite determiner “the” here is followed by a phrase “two countries”

which means related to the part before between Taiwan and Indonesia.

This prompted Indonesia to stop sending students to Taiwan under the program. (line 3&4)

- The definite determiner “the” followed by a phrase “reports” is reflected to the issues between Indonesian students that happen in Taiwan. The second definite determiner is the word “the” is followed by phrase “Taiwanese media” is reflected to public information media in Taiwan. Then, “the nationalist party” is reflected to Kuomintang one of the Taiwanese parties.

CONCLUSION

From the aftereffect of examination in the news story that distributed January 03 2019 named "Indonesian Understudies in Taiwan Express Reports of 'Constrained Work' Are Bogus" observed that there are five kinds of deixis and definiteness. It is comprised of one sort deixis its about diexis of time (worldly) then three kinds of definiteness there are legitimate name, Expression presented by an unequivocal determiner the, Expression presented by a positive determiner that and individual pronoun.
