Politeness Strategies Employed by Popular-Issue Based Talk Show Host

ABSTRACT
In a conversation between a speaker and a hearer, there is an act called as Face Threatening Act (FTA), which may be potential to cause awkwardness and embarrassment of a person. In a talk show, where the whole scene was dominated by conversation between the host and the guest, FTAs might occur. However, there were strategies which can be used to mitigate face threats carried by certain FTAs in a conversation known as Politeness Strategy. This study was conducted to investigate the issue of how politeness strategy is employed by a host to mitigate the FTAs in an Indonesian popular-issue based talk show, ‘Hitam Putih’. In order to do that, three transcriptions of three different sections of the talk show were analyzed. The analysis was done based on the theory of Politeness Strategy proposed by Brown and Levinson (1987). The results of this study revealed that the host used three politeness strategies in both sections. They are Bald on Record, Positive Politeness, and Negative Politeness. Bald on record was likely used by the host in order to have unexpected answer from the quest to keep the talk show interesting. Some positive politeness are also used by the host to make the question smoother and avoiding rude words, on the other hand the host also used some of negative politeness in order to respect the guests.
