Abstract
The genus Nepeta, belongs to Lamiaceae family has been widely used in traditional medicines for their numerous medicinal properties. In this study for the first time, oil content and fatty acid composition of different organs from two Iranian Nepeta species (N. mahanensis and N. bracteata) was characterized and determined. The air-dried plant materials were ground and used for oil extraction with a Soxhlet apparatus and n-hexane as solvent. Free fatty acids (FFAs) were prepared by the saponification of oil samples. FFAs were methylated and analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Among the studied organs, the highest total oil content (27% dry weight) was obtained for seeds of N. mahanensis. In most of the studied organs, the percentages of omega 3- fatty acids in the oils were higher than omega 6- fatty acids. The highest content of omega 3- fatty acids (67.12% total oil) was obtained in seed oil of N. bracteata. The highest percentages of omega 6- fatty acids were found in the oils of stems (21.05%), seeds (19.19%) and leaves (15.93%) of N. mahanensis. The highest contents of Alpha- linolenic acid and linoleic acid were reported as 13.94% and 5.02% dry weight for seed oils of N.
mahanensis, respectively.
