AN ANALYSIS OF STUDENTS’ RESPONSIBILITIES IN ENGLISH LEARNING PROCESS
( A Descriptive Study at SMAN 9 Padang)

ABSTRAK
Tanggung jawab merupakan hal yang sangat penting dan mempunyai konsekuensi apabila lalai dalam melaksanakannya di dalam proses belajar mengajar. Tanggung jawab siswa di dalam kelas sangatlah penting di dalam proses belajar dan mengajar. Salah satu tanggung jawab siswa di dalam kelas adalah melengkapi setiap tugas yang diberikan oleh guru serta ikut berpartisipasi memberikan pendapat di dalam diskusi. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat bagaimana tanggung jawab siswa di dalam pelajaran bahasa Inggris di SMA Negeri 9 Padang. Sumber data dari penelitian ini adalah semua siswa kelas XI IPA 1 yang terdiri dari 32 orang siswa. Dalam mengumpulkan data peneliti menggunakan observasi dan wawancara. Kedua instrument tersebut digunakan untuk melihat bagaimana tanggung jawab siswa di dalam pelajaran bahasa inggris serta mengikuti peraturan yang berlaku di dalam kelas di SMA Negeri 9 Padang. Setelah menganalisa data peneliti menemukan bahwasannya siswa kelas XI IPA 1 di SMA Negeri 9 Padang memiliki tanggung jawab yang baik di dalam pelajaran bahasa Inggris. Yang mana siswa di dalam kelas mengikuti peraturan yang berlaku di dalam pelajaran bahasa Inggris. Setiap siswa mengumpulkan tugas tepat waktu. Siswa aktif memberikan pendapat di dalam diskusi kelompok di kelas.
Berdasarkan hasil penelitian dapat disimpulkan bahwa siswa kelas XI IPA 1 di SMA Negeri 9 Padang memiliki tanggung jawab yang bagus di dalam proses belajar bahasa Inggris di dalam kelas.

INTRODUCTION
English learning process is a condition where the students will do various classroom activities in order to achieve the goal of their education. It is important to be understood that learning process is the activity done by the students, so the students really need to understand what supposed needed by them in completing the activities during they are in learning process. It is exactly known that the students really need high motivation and willingness in following the various activities during they are learning. That willingness is called as the engagement.
There are some phenomena related to students’ responsibility. Students are responsible for being in attendance at the beginning of the school day.
The students come late and leave out in the class while learning process. Sometime the students are absence in class. Students that came late, leave out and absent will cause under communication for students’ participation in learning process. So it will make the students get low score in its subject. Students’ participation in classroom is needed in learning process. Some of students are still shy to speak and give opinion in class. They choose silent even they know. It is caused the students have low confident. Doing exercises and assignment make the students more understand about material beside that the teacher can know how extent the students comprehend and understand the material, that most important is score.
The students get feedback on their effort. Sometime students did not understand about material that given by the teacher. As the result the students are cheating to their friend.
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
The Nature of Responsibilities in English learning process
Students’ responsibility in the learning process is important for them. According to Cane (2002), responsibility is term that is used many different senses, and it is no part of my project to stipulate how it should be used. So, responsibility from a distinctively legal point of view. Responsibility is not about promise to someone and our something. It is one of most important characteristic that the human have. The students’
characteristic in teaching learning process. The students have responsibilities and also follow rule of teacher in the classroom.
Kinds of Students’ Responsibility in English learning process
According to Brown (2009:92) There are several kinds of responsibility in English learning process:
1. Students’ Participation
According to Garrison et all (2003:401), students’ participation is central to the Framework discussed and presented.
Indicator of students participation include:
Participation in the classroom activities is the students have attention and response what teacher talks and role in teaching learning material and also Students giving opinion or
argumentation in discussion. The students are interested to study and when the teacher explains the material. In classroom the students can discussed with their friend about material that given by the teacher. The students can presented with the appropriate answer in classroom activities. Students interest when they teacher explain the material it can make the students also have participation in learning process. The students automatically participate in the classroom interaction.
2. Students’ Behavior
According to Peterson (1996:42), explains that students behavior in learning process is the test of whether or not a reinforce is effective. Behavior observations before and during reinforcement provides the teacher with data regarding the effectiveness. Students’
behavior is important aspect to changing a students’ unwanted action to more acceptable behavior over time through the use of reinforcement. Students’ behavior is important skill in teaching learning process. Teacher can see student behavior in English learning process.
Kinds of Students Participation in English learning process
According to Finn (1992) concludes that Indicators of successful type’s participation in school include consistent attendance, all schedule classes on time, pay attention to instruction, giving opinion or argumentation in discussion, academic achievement, and aspirations for continuing education beyond high school. It can be seen when the teacher explain the material the students consist attendance. The students answer the exercise that given by the teacher in classroom activity. In addition the students have a self confidence to answer the question from teacher. The students must active in teaching learning process. Students participate with behavioral norm, such as attendance and involvement.
Kinds of Students’ Behavior in English learning process
Students’ behavior is important skill in classroom participation. Attitude of students in classroom interaction is important for the teacher. According to Alan (2013:3) Characteristics of students behavior is may display behavioral problems in the classroom, have attitude, discipline and also students’ teacher relation.
The students in learning process must multi step instruction. The students follow the rule of teacher with good behavioral. Students’ behavior is important to make students have good mark in English learning process.
Students have a best understanding if they have well behavioral in the classroom activity.
Furthermore, Russel in Raatma (2000) states that types of behavior that should be forwarded included: Unusual or erratic behavior in the classroom, excessive absence from class or activities in learning process by a typically engage students, written work with troubling themes or references,
verbal written, or electronic threats made by a students. It is about student interest, enjoyment or sense of belonging. When the students participation in learning, would seek to go beyond the requirement and would relish challenge. It will be indicated of students’ behavior in the classroom activities.
Definition of English Learning Process
Generally, learning can be defined as a change in a person's behavior as a result of an experience. According to Braungart, Margaret M. and Richard (2007:52) English learning is a relatively permanent in mental processing, emotional functioning and behavior as a result of experience. In the context of classroom, learning can be define as individuals acquire new knowledge or skill and alter their thoughts, feelings, attitudes and actions.
Students who learn new knowledge and skill automatically can change their understanding so that they have their perception or conclusion about what they learnt. When the teacher teaching them about new topic but they are not engaged in learning, the purpose of the teaching and learning will not be gained. Teacher as a person who transfers knowledge to the students will be difficult if students do not have a sense of wanting to learn. Curiosity to learn in this case belongs to the level of student engagement in learning, either individually or in groups.
DATA AND RESEARCH METHOD
The researcher implemented descriptive research because the researcher wanted to analyze how students’
responsibilities in English learning process. According to Gay an Airisian (2000: 257), descriptive study determines and describes the way of things are. It can be said that in descriptive research only descript about phenomena and we do ot find treatment in descriptive research.
Furthermore, Referring to explanation above, the researcher chose students class XI IPA 1 in Senior High School at SMAN 9 Padang for academic year 2014/2015 as the participants. The researcher wanted to see students’
responsibilities at this class. Instrument of the research is observations and interview.
Technique of Data Collection
In gathering the data in the field, the researcher had done some step. Collecting the data through observation. First, the researcher went SMA N 9 Padang to give the letter of the research recommendation from STKIP and educational department. Next, the researcher met headmaster of SMAN 9 Padang to get permission introducing observation in this school. After the researcher got permission from headmaster, then researcher met English teachers of SMA N 9 Padang to arrange the schedule of the research. Then, the researcher asked permission to observe in teacher’s class. In the class the researcher observed students’ activity.
Furthermore, Collecting the Data Through Interview. To get the purpose of this research, the researcher needed to collect the data. The researcher collected the data through interview. Before the researcher gave interview for the students, the researcher met validator to validate interview protocol. Next, the
researcher gave the question to the students. After the teacher taught in class the researcher asked some information about the students’ responsibility in doing task. The researcher gave some question to the students related the students responsibility in English learning process. The students answered the question from the researcher with comments. The students were given freedom to answer the question with real condition.
Technique of Data Analysis
After collecting the data from some instruments above, the researcher tried to analyze the data. The resarcher organized the data from open ended question, the researcher analyzed the data about students’
responsibilities. According to Gay and Airisian (2000:239), there are four steps to analyze the data in descriptive research.
a. Reading/Memoing
The first step in analyzing data is reading/memoing; reading field notes, transcripts, memos, and observer comment to get a sense of the data. In this step, the researcher read all of data that have been collected from observation, and interview.
b. Description
After that by the describing observation and interview the researcher got the true picture information about students’ responsibilities.
The researcher described the data in depth to get detail description.
c. Classifying
Classifying small piece of data into more general categories is the qualitative research’s way to make sense and found connected among the data. The categories may be predetermined before data collection, developing during data collection. In this step the researcher would classified whether the students have responsibilities or no, and also classify what students problem in responsibilities from some data have been gotten from the instruments above.
d. Interpreting
Data interpretation is based on the connection, common aspect and linkage among data that has been classified and interpreted into a good and clear interpretation in order to make the reader east to understand this research.
FINDINGS
Based on the data analysis, the researcher got result of this research. This research is about the responsibilities students in English learning process. The data were collected from observation and interview. The research question is: “What are students’ behavior in English learning process?, “How are the students’
participation in English process? And “what are factors that make the students have low participation. Based on the data analysis and related to the research question, the researcher found:
a. Student Attitude
In classroom activity the students have a good attitude. The students’ always respond when the teacher given question related the material. The students make the exercise individually .Their ability students is good in English learning process. The students have a good discipline in classroom activity. In this observation, the researcher found students’ attitude in classroom interaction is good. It means that the students joining in school day, no absent in classroom and also no cheating doing exercise. The students have politeness when their talk with their friend. The student follow rule of teacher in learning process.
Only some of students have a lack attendance.
b. All schedule classes on time
The students always report homework and exercise on time, and also complete the assignment on time. If the students do not report the class assignment on time they got consequences from the teacher. As the consequences, it would gave a good impact to increase the students learning and teaching objectives such as they are able to compete in global scope, they could also become a great thinker because increase their knowledge or skill in classroom activity. Based on the interview the participants, the researcher found out that the students on time all schedule classes.
c. Pay Attention to instruction
The indicator of successful students in learning process, it is consistent attendance, academic achievement, and aspiration for continuing education beyond high school. For instance, students may be expected to complete certain in readings in order to respond to these questions. The students XI IPA 1 have good attendance in classroom activity. The students enjoy following rule of teacher instruction.
In classroom activity the students have attention when the teacher explains material.
Based on the researcher observation, they have a best understanding about material given by English teacher. So the students have got point plus while the teacher given question and the students answer with appropriate answer. The students respond what teacher instruction. Students’ attention gave effect toward task that given by teacher in teaching learning process. In other word, the students got the educational goals in teaching learning process.
d. Giving opinion and argumentation
The characteristic of students’
participation is students ask question in teaching and learning process, and give opinion in discussion class. In other word, the student’s questions are aimed to make the explanation that had been explained clearly or to know their comprehension about what they had explained in classroom. The students had a time to give opinion and idea in discussion or process of learning. The
students follow rule of discussion and gave question to other group.
Therefore, based on the result of data had been gotten, the researcher concluded that students class XI IPA I in SMA N 9 Padang have a good responsibilities, participation and behavior in English learning process. The researcher found students did interaction in asking and answer question sections each others. There is not all of the students answering was true, but the teacher that taught at the class saw the students’
motivation when giving their opinions.
e. Participate or engage in classroom activity Students participate or engage in teaching learning process. The students engage when the teacher correction the exercise and the student write the answer in white board. After that the teacher correction together the students answer.
The students participate all of activities in the teaching learning process. Students engage all of aspect in teaching and learning process.
As a result, the researcher found the students has responsibilities in English learning process. It can be concluded that there were all of participants, class XI IPA I has a good responsibilities in classroom interaction. So, the researcher felt all of the students have participation and behavior doing task that given by the teacher.
CONCLUSIONS
Responsibility is an obligation that must fulfill and which has consequent. It has rules that should be obeyed. Responsibility tells about how to fulfill the obligation by following the rules and accepting the consequent. It is one of most important characteristic that the students have. Students are responsible can be discipline and good behavior in their life. It is supported by Cane (2002) explain that responsibility is a fundamental legal concept, a basic building block of legal through and reasoning. Responsibility is important criterion of legal liability, but not the sole criterion.
Putting the point another way, liability is a trigger of legal penalties and remedies, whereas personal responsibility one trigger liability.
In proving that statement, the researcher conducted the descriptive research in SMA N 9 Padang with the purpose to find out what are students’ responsibilities in English learning process, to know what factor that makes the students has responsibility in English learning process and also to know what are students’ behaviors in English learning process. In getting the data, the researcher used two instruments; observation and interview. All of the instruments were given to the students as a source of the data in this research.
Based on the research finding, the researcher formulated the conclusion into; the result of the observation shows that the students’ responsibilities in English learning process at SMA N 9 Padang students XI IPA 1 have a good responsibility in English learning process. The students have a good participation and
behavior in English learning process. In the data, the students can be active and participation in class discussion. The students have positive behaviors they always work individually in classroom interaction. Next, the interview result that the students XI IPA 1 have a good participation in group discussion and small group work. The students follow rule of teacher, doing exercise with good in school or in home. The students report exercise or home work on time. The students have positive behavioral in English learning process.
Therefore, the students have good responsibilities in the class room can help the students active and have a best understanding in classroom activity. The students have a self confident and get a good mark from the teacher Suggestion
After doing the investigation phase in the field and analyzing the collected data. The researcher states insightful suggestions at this point. Based on the finding, there were some suggestions could be gives as the following:
1. To the Teacher
a. To the English teacher to constructing discipline and self management to students.
b. The teacher can motivation to teach students about students did not have responsibility and give more attention to the students in the class especially in English subject.
2. To the Students
a. The students can discipline and active to learning English.
b. The student’s active in classroom activity, they have a good mark and have a best understanding in learning English.
c. The students have to pay attention when the teacher explains the material.
