Characterization and Determination of Fatty acids in Oils of Different Organs from Four Iranian Achillea Species

Abstract
Our purpose was characterization and determination of oil content and fatty acid composition of organs from four Iranian Achillea species (A. wilhelmsii, A. millefolium, A. aucheri and A. vermicularis). Oils were extracted with a Soxhlet apparatus and n-hexane as the extracting solvent. Free fatty acids (FFAs) were prepared by the saponification of oil samples. FFAs were methylated and analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Among the studied organs, the highest total oil content was obtained for seeds of A. vermicularis (32.86%), inflorescences of A. aucheri (7.42%), leaves of A. millefolium (6.53%), stems of A. aucheri (1.50%) and roots of A. vermicularis (1.10%). The highest percentage of unsaturated fatty acids was reported for seeds (92.42%
of total oils). Linolenic acid (LA) was the most abundant unsaturated fatty acids in the oils, with the highest content in seeds (74%). Other frequent unsaturated fatty acid in the oils was alpha- linolenic acid (ALA) with the highest content (35.38%) in leaves of A. vermicularis. The highest contents of oleic acid (OA) were found in inflorescences (28.68%) of A. millefolium and seeds (24.60%) of A. vermicularis. The highest percentage of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) was obtained as 12.49% for stems of A. wilhelmsii.
