As this chapter has tried to demonstrate, there are a wide variety of methods available to take XML source files and load them into SQL Server. In some cases, the choice will depend on what your objectives are—if you want to load the file “as is” without shredding the data into its component parts, then clearly OPENROWSET (BULK) could be the best solution. If, however, the source file is being used as a medium for data transfer, then you have a wider set of options available. If you are basing your ETL process around T-SQL, you could find that using SQL Server’s XQuery support is the way to go. If, on the other hand, you are more “SSIS-centric,” then the SSIS XML task can be an excellent solution in many cases. For really large source files—or where speed is of the essence—then SQLXML Bulk Loader is possibly the only viable option.

The differences become apparent below the database level, where multidimensional rather than relational concepts are prevalent. In the Multidimensional model, data is modeled as a series of cubes and dimensions, not tables. Each cube is made up of one or more measure groups, and each measure group in a cube is usually mapped onto a single fact table in the data warehouse. A measure group contains one or more measures, which are very similar to measures in the Tabular model. A cube also has two or more dimensions: one special dimension, the Measures dimension, which contains all the measures from each of the measure groups, and various other dimensions such as Time, Product, Geography, Customer, and so on, which map onto the logical dimensions present in a dimensional model. Each of these non-Measures dimensions consists of one or more attributes (for example, on a Date dimension, there might be attributes such as Date, Month, and Year), and these attributes can themselves be used as single-level hierarchies or to construct multilevel user hierarchies. Hierarchies can then be used to build queries. Users start by analyzing data at a highly aggregated level, such as a Year level on a Time dimension, and can then navigate to lower levels such as Quarter, Month, and Date to look for trends and interesting anomalies.

Although you can use an insert operation to prepopulate a FILESTREAM field with a null value, an empty value, or a limited amount of inline data, a large amount of data is streamed more efficiently into a file that uses Win32 interfaces. Here, the Win32 interfaces work within the context of a SQL Server transaction, and you use the Pathname intrinsic function to obtain the logical Universal Naming Convention (UNC) path of the BLOB file on the file system. You then use the OpenSqlFilestream application programming interface (API) to obtain a file handle and operate on the BLOB via the file system by using the following Win32 file streaming interfaces: ReadFile, WriteFile, TransmitFile, SetFilePointer, SetEndOfFile, and FlushFileBuffers. Close the handle by using CloseHandle. Because file operations are transactional, you cannot delete or rename FILESTREAM files through the file system.

When creating a partition function, you must specify or provide a few pieces of information. The first and most obvious is a name . The next is the input parameter type, which is the data type of the col- umn that will be used for partitioning . The only data types that cannot be used are text, ntext, image, xml, timestamp, varchar(max), nvarchar(max), and varbinary(max); alias data types; and common language runtime (CLR) user-defined data types. Typically, a date or integer column is used for the partitioning function. The first is the boundary value, which acts as a constraint on each partition . This value is equal to n + 1 the number of values supplied . For example, refer back to Figure 8-1 and note that the values would be 2010, 2011, and 2012, and a fourth partition that contains all the data greater than 2012. The last argument defines on which side of the boundary, LEFT or RIGHT, the boundary will reside .

To use OGR2OGR to write spatial data to a KML file, you set the -f format flag as "KML", and set the name of the kml file as the {Destination}. Note that KML files can only contain coordinates defined using SRID 4326, so if your source data uses any other spatial reference system, you will also have to use the –t_srs option to transform the coordinates to SRID 4326 in the process. In this example, we export data from the precincts_reprojected table, in which the geog4326 column already contains coordinates in the correct spatial reference system (because they were transformed into SRID 4326 during import). We use the –sql option to retrieve only the ID and shape of each precinct. The shape information itself is retrieved from the geog4326 column in Well-Known Binary format using the STAsBinary() method. Although OGR2OGR can read SQL Server's native binary format, I find it sometimes leads to problems, and using the industry-standard WKB format is a more reliable option.

Report Builder 1.0 was a basic tool introduced with SSRS 2005 that produced a simple but proprietary report with limited capabilities. It was a great tool for its time that allowed users to simply drag and drop data entities and fi elds from a semantic data model to produce simple reports. Today, the latest version of Report Builder creates reports that are entirely cross-compatible with SSDT and that can be enhanced with advanced features. Consider Report Builder 1.0 yester- day’s news. If you’re using it now, I strongly suggest making the transition to the newer tool set. The 2008 product version introduced Report Builder 2.0, a tool that is equally useful for business users and technical professionals. For user-focused designers, Report Builder 2.0 was simple and elegant. Incremental product improvements over the past few versions have made out-of-the-box report design even easier in Report Builder. Users can design their own queries or simply use data source and dataset objects that have been prepared for them by corporate IT so that they can drag and drop items or use simple design wizards to produce reports. In Report Builder, each report is managed as a single document that can be deployed directly to a folder on the report server or in the SharePoint document library. The version number has been dropped from the Report Builder name; now it is simply differentiated from previous versions by the version of SQL Server that installs it. Figure 1-5 shows the current version of Report Builder (installed with SQL Server 2012) with a map report in design view.

There are two providers for collecting data: the file provider used by the server side tracing, and the rowset provider used by client side tracing. That means that there is not a built in direct-to-table provider. At first this can be confusing to people new to SQL Server tracing but if you think about it is quite logical. To have a direct-to-table provider you’d have to follow the rules of SQL Server data writing, transaction logs, locking, blocking, resources, etc… this way you just have a simple file or a memory buffer that the trace data gets written to and SQL Server is done with it. One important thing to note is that although you can use filters when creating traces, those filters are not applied in the data collection phase. Every single column for any event is fully collected and sent to the provider where it gets filtered down to the columns we specified in the trace definition. It is also better to have a few smaller traces than one huge trace. This is because each trace has its own target destination and you can put these targets on different drives

If you have done some work in the world of extract, transfer, and load (ETL) processes, then you’ve run into the proverbial crossroads of handling bad data. The test data is staged, but all attempts to retrieve a foreign key from a dimension table result in no matches for a number of rows. This is the crossroads of bad data. At this point, you have a fi nite set of options. You could create a set of hand-coded complex lookup functions using SQL Sound-Ex, full-text searching, or distance- based word calculation formulas. This strategy is time-consuming to create and test, complicated to implement, and dependent on a given language, and it isn’t always consistent or reusable (not to mention that everyone after you will be scared to alter the code for fear of breaking it). You could just give up and divert the row for manual processing by subject matter experts (that’s a way to make some new friends). You could just add the new data to the lookup tables and retrieve the new keys. If you just add the data, the foreign key retrieval issue is solved, but you could be adding an entry into the dimension table that skews data-mining results downstream. This is what we like to call a lazy-add. This is a descriptive, not a technical, term. A lazy-add would import a misspelled job title like “prasedent” into the dimension table when there is already an entry of “president.” It was added, but it was lazy.
